Roofing Nailers

I could use some info about pneumatic roofing nailers. I have regular nailers, but I thought it would be better to use roofing nails on my screen room - 12' x 12'. Maybe regular nails would be okay. I looked online at roofing nailers, and there's a Wen for $105 that uses 11 gauge nails, but no one seems to sell them. Wen mentions nothing about degrees. Lowe's sells the nailer, but not the nails. Other guns use 15 ga and/or 15 degree roofing nails, and Lowe's has plenty of them.

So any info on getting shingles on the roof would be appreciated. I'm almost finished putting the rafters up. Then I'll do the sheathing and the ice and water shield.

Thanks.

Jerry, the manufacturer of the roofing materials should be able to specify the type of nail and the spacing to use. If Lowe's is selling you the materials they should be able to provide this information. Also, if buying yet another nail gun for a 12 x 12 area renting might make more sense. New York state gets some pretty severe weather...

Jerry for only a 12 x 12 I think a good hammer would be all you need. Roofing nails are short and easy to drive and if that is all you are doing anything else would be over kill. Good luck in the job!

That's 2 good comments up there from Country Boy & dc3legs. Maybe just use the $100 to rent someone out to help.
An extra hand could be worth more than the new tool.

Bostitch. (That’s period at the end of the word)as in period.
Buy it, use it and sell it on Craig’s list for 20 bucks less than you paid for it. Or just rent one unless you want to leave it in your will to your son.
It sounds like you got the rest covered, ply ($ OMG) and ice and water. Do the whole roof in ice and water as it is small. I did my whole main roof in it as I’ve been building since 1975 and I don’t want water issues. Penny wise and dollar foolish, not me. Good luck.

Thanks!

A hammer is so primitive - and noisy. 😁

I like to use a project as an excuse to buy tools. The nailer made it so easy to attach the rafters. I can't imagine using a hammer for all of that.

I remember reshingling this roof years ago. I must have used a regular nailer with regular nails - not roofing nails.

Roofing nails have a larger head than regular nails because it so easy for a small head to pull through an asphalt shingle. I just shingled a roof this size by hand, and you can drive the nails with a single hammer blow. Better yet, the shingle holds the nail so you don’t need to hold it while driving. The shingle manufacturer specifies 4 or 5 nails per shingle. All the time is spent measuring and cutting shingles for the proper offset and end shingle of each row.

Having said that, any project is a rationale for buying a new tool

One time use. You don't need the best. I would go Harbor Freight.

Harbor Freight has one on temporary sale for $60, but not locally and not mail order. I'd have to drive over an hour each way. The Wen has good reviews, and it's available locally and from Amazon.

I roofed for years with my dad, so lots of experience here. If that roof is 12x12, all you need is a hammer and nails. You can be half done before you get all the auto gear rigged up.

Jerry, check good old Harbor Freight, my nail gun from them is at least 10 years old and going strong, unless your thinking of going pro at roofs that is.

Rent it from Home Depot, for a 12x12 area it would be cheaper and cost effective I rented a flooring nailer few years back and it was cheaper in the long run than buying a nailer for a one time job.

Why not use metal roof with screws. Last longer, or better yet, use thin film solar material.
