Stay thirsty my friends.
Since he wasn't the only bidder, there must be gold in them thar Leicas. He'll probably keep it for a few years and then try to sell/auction it for more than he paid.
Vintage Leica camera collectors have extremely deep pockets. Dedicated collectors are not in the same world as us. If that is a model that is missing from their collection then money is not an issue. They are a scary bunch of people. I have met a couple of Leica nuts at a local camera club, lovely people, however are they weird or what. One of them asked "What do you shoot" I replied Nikon and Fuji..........they froze for at least ten seconds, looked at each other and both smiled at me as they walked to-wards the bar.
I felt like I had just told them that I was using a Kodak 127 roll film camera that I bought in 1960 for £4.00 (about $2 in those days)
I have never really recovered from that encounter, it left me mentally scarred for life.I never returned to that camera club.
As for my own view there is more modern gear that I would spend that kind of money on.

That's why I avoid camera clubs - and people in general.
You missed your cue. That's when you should have added, "And stupid people". :-)

I said "people in general," so I thought I had my bases covered. Expect the worst of people, and you will never be disappointed.
Collectors must own all of what ever they collect! No matter the cost! It's an obsession and once into it deep enough they will stop at nothing to possess all. It's the thrill of the acquisition I swear that drives them. And I am going to Photo Expo in NYC next week leaving ALL of my credit cards home. I just may have to visit the Leica and Hasselblad kiosk for a real challenge
For me it's a good thing the Canon 800mm weighs a ton and I would need a caddy to drag it around for me. That makes me get twitchy!
I would never spend that kind of money on anything that would end up sitting on a shelf..yes people that have that kind of money to throw around are definitely a different sort of breed than us photographers..I'm just barely able to purchase the newer equipment I need now in order to rebuild my needs for building back my studio...it's been a slow process ..as for camera clubs..I avoid them because too many people who think their work is superior than others in one spot tend to make me feel a bit insecure after a while about my own work..I'm already my own worse critic...

See you at the show, not sure yet if I'll leave all the CC's home...maybe sneak in just one...ya know in my sock so my wife doesn't know.
It's the best show ever. And way too many things to tempt. I am sure there is a new tripod in my future. I will be there all 4 dAys and defiantly the cocktail party.
Unfortunately I have but one day, but that's all I need to get myself in trouble with the wife...two days will get me a boot in the A$%, 3 would get me just booted out :( I can't imagine four days...
