This guy was hanging on my patio yesterday afternoon. I took these with my Nikon d500 and sigma 17-70mm lens.

Shot in RAW. Cropped and processed in LR (mobile version). Uploaded for social media in JPEG.

Liked the images…how could I improve the result?

Both good images. The second shot is nicer than the first. The first one is slightly back-focused.

What’s to improve, Lynda? These are very good, if not excellent, images, IMO.

Stan

Your technical quality is great. I too have a Sigma 17-70 lens and it is a fine piece of glass, as are most of the Sigma lenses.
Composition is a highly personal thing and your comp was good. It is difficult when dealing with bugs and things of that nature and when you move around to try to improve their 'pose' they sometimes take off. My personal preference when doing insects is to try to catch them in a not so straight forward composition. I like them heading up or down in a photo.
I have attached a photo of a grasshopper I did a couple years ago. I shot about a dozen exposures and liked this one because it seemed to lend some personality to the guy. I was very fortunate he didn't take off. One thing that helped was that I was using a Sigma 70-200 with macro mode which allowed me to stand away from him a bit.
All in all, yours was an excellent pic. Keep up the good work.

Nikon_jon, thanks for your input. I so enjoy your posts and photos and am honored that you see that my “technical quality is great.” I have a few of him at different angles, but there was an issue with strong sun and shadows, so these were the sharpest!

Great set of images!!!
The second is fantastic due to better focus on the whole subject.

They look great! The second could have a more solid background, but that's work that may be (too) difficult on your mobile editor. I wouldn't bother, but you asked, in case you want to pull up the image in LR classic or PS when you get home.
