Useing I Phone

The wife and I will be taking a trip next year to Alaska and I'm thinking of just using my I Phone 7 for the pictures. Has any one used a telephoto lens that attachaches to a I Phone? Are they any good? what would be a recommended brand?
One big reason for using the I Phone 7 is the GPS feature, makes it easier after the trip to tell where we are and what were looking at.

I have a Sony DSC-HX90V camera that has a very slow and poor GPS but it does have a 30X zoom lens which is nice. It also comes with EVF ( view finder) that I like using.

Thanks for any input you may have.

I went on a Mediterranean cruise a couple years ago and only took my iPhone. The scenery photos were just fine but the indoor low light photos sucked.

There were not a lot of photos for which I needed a telephoto lens.

Alaska might need a telephoto.

I received 2 different cell phone telephoto lenses as gifts and found that their image quality was horrible. And color fringing was unavoidable. Of course, they both appear to be some of the cheapest ones available, so I'm not surprised. You might check into the better-quality lenses if you think you'll need one for your trip. The "Moment" brand comes to mind. Good luck in your search.

I live up here, and I can tell you, don’t leave the HX-90V at home. Your iPhone 7 will take nice scenic shots, but there will be some wildlife and birds you may want to photograph, and the iPhone will fall short. You don’t want to have to explain what that tiny dark dot way out there is.

I assume you are planning on coming up here in the summer, so don’t worry much about low light shooting. It doesn’t get much darker than dusk in June and July. Your Sony will be just fine. And forget the clip on telephotos attachments for the iPhone. They produce poor quality images and the “telephoto” ones don’t reach out there very far anyway. I use my iPhone 11 for lots of shots, but I have other cameras for longer distance shooting.

I would certainly take the Sony with you. When it comes to iPhones your 7 is now 4 generations behind in technology and in a couple of months will be 5 generations behind when the 13 is released. If your trip is in 2022 I would consider upgrading your iPhone to a 12 Pro or even a 12 Pro Max. When the 13 is released this fall the 12s will go on sale.

If you’re just going to view the photos on a screen, you could get by with the iPhone and a quality tele gizmo. If you’re printing, then a decent camera and zoom combo would be advised.

I would suggest checking out the 'Smartphone Photography' section. There are several threads about the Moment lens, there.

I used the 0.5x and 2.0x Moment lens with my older phones (6 and 7). The lens were much better than the digital zoom, available at the time. With the 12 Pro, the 0.5x and a 2.5x lens are part of the camera. Adding a 2x tele over the 2.5x give you the equivalent reach of about 125mm with good quality. I don't use the 0.5x since it's built into the camera now.

The lens requires the Moment camera case. The case incorporates a bayonet mount that the lens attach to. It's not a clip-on system like most of the cheap systems. And yes, the Moment lens are not cheap as you've probably already noticed.

You will have occasional need of the telephoto - for moose, possibly a bear or two - so take your camera with telephoto - but the scenic views will offer the most outstanding photo ops.

I agree with the post about your iPhone being horribly outdated for photos. The quality is not very good at all. Their new technology is 100-fold better. I upgraded to the iPhone 11 Pro last year and use it much of the time for scenic shots and mostly use my full-frame Canon 6D with telephoto for wildlife photography. The dynamic range of the iPhone is outstanding, and the ability to do panoramas is really useful. You can crop the photos right in-camera. As with any camera, learning to use the features of the camera is essential before traveling with it.

I recently posted some samples from my vacation in Maine last month demonstrating the dynamic range of the iPhone 11 Pro:

Your iPhone 7 is really old now, and newer iPhones have much better photo capabilities, especially the iPhone 12. If my iPhone 7 was all I had, I'd take my D7100 with me.

A trip to Alaska is likely a once in a lifetime trip. Take the best camera you can afford, and practice before you go. I have an iPhone 7 which is always with me for quick shots, but take my Nikon Z6 whenever I travel. There are many less expensive cameras that will (with a bit of practice in advance) provide you with images not achievable by an iPhone.

Enjoy!
