I really don't want to revive an old argument, but this study should settle the question.

Cute, but not even close. If you mean the number of fatalities, not even close to HIV/AIDS (38 million dead). If you mean the percentage of fatalities, again, not even close - Ebola and Marburg outbreaks have had a 90% fatality rate.

For those unconvinced, how would you feel if you need surgery and as you go into the operating room you find the surgeon, nurses and other personnel are not wearing masks to protect you as they talk, sneeze or cough during the procedure?

If their talking about the mask in the picture, that is not a "surgical" mask. It's a "treatment" mask which is commonly used by nurses and doctors as they treat a patient and disposed of between patients. A surgical mask looks similar but ties behind the head to eliminate leaks and also has smaller pores. Treatment masks were tried very briefly where my wife worked as a surgical RN but deemed unacceptable for surgery.

The purpose of a mask is to cover your nose and mouth to protect others from you. Sure, some masks protect better than others, but some protection is better than none and nothing is 100% (except death).

A mask also provides a level of protection to the wearer. How much protection depends on a number of variables like type of mask, fit, exposure scenario, erc.

I'd feel that the anesthesiologist wasn't doing his/her job.
