We use the large containers of laundry detergent. The heavy walls of the containers are great for making a vinyl patch when I am repairing household items in my shop. I was looking at one of the bottles this morning and struck an idea; reuse the bottle for a gasoline can. Paint it red. Label it as "GASOLINE" with a paint stick. Save $25.00 I have multiple gasoline powered yard tools and a generator. I drive out-of-the-way to purchase real gasoline (ethanol-free) and I fill about eight cans.
I would of course test it outside for a few weeks before putting it into practice. Other than the legality issues, anything else I should watch for?

It is ILLEGAL in most states to use unapproved containers to dispense gasoline into. It is also a fire and explosion danger. NOT a good idea at all!

Bad idea. The plastic may or may not be dissolved by gasoline. Even if it doesn’t fail immediately, the plastic may slowly dissolve, contaminating the gasoline, clogging small orifices such as main jets.

Besides, gasoline will dissolve most plastics unless they are formulated to resist gasoline.
Not instantaneously, but slowly.
Wouldn't it be nasty to pick up a gallon container and have it fall apart and dump the gasoline all over the place?
Spend the money on a container
designed for gasoline!
Related to explosion: detergent containers are not strong enough to withstand the pressures of expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes.

I have two of these 5 gallon cans, one for ethanol free, the other for ethanol gas. They are worth the cost.

Detergent and gasoline mix to produce a nasty flammable jelly, a form of which was used in Nam.

Only trouble with these is that are heavy to lift when full. I'm replacing mine with 2x 10ltr. ones.

That's one reason out of many that elderly people should do strength training. I'm 83 and I train every three days with a distant friend via Facetime. Yes, those full cans are heavy, but I can lift them. I put one on the tire of my riding mower and use a siphon to fill the gas tank of the mower.

Other than the legality issues - I think you answered your own question.

Other than being illegal, pain comes to mind. . . .
Visit a burn unit sometime . . .
