So I normally download my images every day and post the best one right away. We recently moved and we don’t have internet at the house so I haven’t edited any pics, until today. I don’t understand why I have internet on my phone though.

We have 3 hummingbirds living in a tree in our backyard, so I bought three feeders for them and have gotten some great pics, at least in the viewfinder they looked great. I like to have a shutter speed of at least 1/2000 for birds and adjust my ISO accordingly.

I downloaded them into Lightroom and all of my pics from yesterday looked terrible. Fuzzy, and out of focus.

So I did test shots today. Canon 1dx3 with my 500 f4 with a 2x making it a 1000mm lens. I stayed at 1,000 or lower ISO. It’s overcast so I had to shoot some at 1/800. The pictures turned out great humming birds at 30’ and doves and sparrows at about 120’.

The only difference was the ISO. 25,000 and the pics looked great zoomed in on the image preview but terrible in Lightroom. At 1,000 they look great in Lightroom.

Dummy me, but I learned a lesson I hope you can avoid. I only hope I get pictures of the hummers dancing together at one of the feeders again.

Live and learn.

FYI, -The Internet is on your Phone bc you (Hopefully), have it included on your 'Data Allowance' on your Carrier's Plan, so with no WiFi yet, your phone will get the Internet over the 'phone-line', - BUT - Check your Data allowance, or your Rate will rise dramatically if you go over the limit!

The hummers will become a fixture. They will claim each feeder and defend it hearty like. Like

And, assuming a decent data allowance, you can usually add a wireless access point to your phone and access that from your laptop thus giving you internet access. On my phone I use that in emergencies to download email when I have no internet access but do have cellphone coverage. It is a bit of a hog on data though.

Before you delete your ISO 25000 images, download a trial of On1 NoNoise. You may like the results. I took a shot of a hummer at 11400 and it was fine.

Depending on your plan - you may have "unlimited data" - but there IS generally a limit after which your data may slow down. Some carriers will just slow you to the point where streaming HD videos will not work, but on my AT&T plan, after the data limit my data speed slows down so much I can barely send an email - I cannot even text a photo. I found this out on vacation when I had to use my phone as a secure hotspot on many occasions. Had to wait until the end of the 30-day cycle to start over on the data limit.

(Be aware that with most phones you can turn it on to act as a "hot spot" which you can link to with your laptop or other Wifi devices so that they will also have internet access. But do watch the data cap.)

Interesting. Learning is what this hobby - and UHH - are all about.

Took 105 shots of active hummers on Monday using canon 100-400 in shade. Forgot to change iso from 100 to auto so got 105 very very dark pictures. Maybe could have saved if I’d have shot raw. You are correct; live and learn.

I always prefer at least a little wing blur with hummingbirds. Those completely frozen wing shots look unnatural.

QUESTION ONE

Forgive me, I am confused by your post. Have YOU learned to shoot at no greater than 1000 iso?

Is this your conclusion?

I do NOT use LR so I don't know to interpret YOUR findings... I learned to switch to Auto Iso and my Topaz denoise handles the HIGHER isos easily ... I only USE PS

question TWO ... I have the 500f4 L lens + TC 1.4... I see YOU are utilizing the TC2x, have you found this slows down your BIF images at all? I love my present combo, but another few mms would also be nice...

Regards, richard

There is something confusing about your post. In LR, a high ISO image will not look fuzzy and out of focus, you will see sensor noise. It sounds to me that your image was still loading when you used LR to look at the image. The preview image is not fully processed. Can you reopen the original image and see if you get that message “loading”?
Topaz can denoise images very well. I took a twilight image of a lion mom and three cubs at 50000 ISO with my Canon R5. Topaz Denoise virtually eliminated all sensor noise.
