Old shutterbug coming back to 'serious'

I go back a long way. Still have my first press camera, a Speed Graphic 2.25x3.25 with all the attachments, even the manual and hard case.
Graduating from film and chemicals to digital wasn't hard, but I was no longer working as a pro, so I had snapshot digitals. Now I want to get back to some serious photojournalism, but not studio work. I'm working on some books showing special subjects like unique landmark buildings and special tree studies.
How does this community feel about Nikon 5100 as a decent, but not top of the line, tool?
