My summer vacation: photos from the backyard.

Loc: Florida's East Coast
I recently returned from our trip to "downeast" Maine - although that term is used by people and businesses that like to use the term to refer to the entire state of Maine, it truly belongs to that part of the Maine coast that is beyond Acadia - beyond where the tourists usually go. The water is cold and the tourist infrastructure is minimal, which I imagine is just the way most downeast folk like it.
Although we sometimes stay with relatives, if a crowd "from away" is expected, we like to rent a house on Beals Island that is right on the harbor - with wharfs belonging to lobster fishermen right at the back yard. The house is stunning, and the early morning sunrise wakes us (on days when the fog is not too thick) to the sound of lobster boats heading out to tend their traps. With the constantly changing light, sky, and tides, there were continual opportunities for photography right out our back door! The cold North Atlantic has a smell of its' own also, with the addition of some seaweed smell at low tide. So nice.
