gmail with an announcement?

Unfortunately, Charter and Thunderbird have stopped working together. As a result, I've had to switch, and my students speak highly of gmail. Here's my request. My students know that they can send me email questions, any day of the week, and I want them to not wait over a weekend to receive an answer to their question. But like many of you, I work on my images over the weekend. Hence, gmail could receive a new email, but my photo image software will have covered it up.

Do any of you use gmail, and have found a successful to have a 'chime' or any sound to tell you a new email is received? Gmail preferences state that a sound, like a chime, and be activated. I've tried that, but still no sound. Do any of you use gmail and have a bell type sound, informing you that a new email has been received?

You can turn Notifications on in Windows and there will be a little "pop up" telling you that a new message has arrived. I use mine that way however keep in mind that other gmail messages will also show up for that account so it may be a bit annoying. In your case use a specific account name for your students and do all of your other needs on another account ID if that bothers you.

Creative idea, and I thank you for that.

Unfortunately, sort of, I don't use Windows, but rather I use an iMac.

Curious - How did Thunderbird quit working with Charter?
I use Thunderbird with Comcast and two websites I maintain.
I have Thunderbird set to play a custom wave file when I get new mail, but it does so only when Thunderbird is running.
The Comcast email client doesn't support audio notifications.
Usually, in order to get a "notification" some kind of email client must be running and checking the email server periodically.

To answer your question, all of a sudden, I found I could continue to receive email via Thunderbird, but I could not send anything, whatsoever. I love Thunderbird, but with Charter, it's a dead issue. I still receive, but I cannot reply to a single one.

It sounds like you are in the same boat as me with your using Comcast.

I agree with having two accounts. I volunteer for a large feline rescue and have a separate email for rescue-related business, and a third for potential adopters to reach me. It is easy to switch between the three using the little ID icon in the upper right corner to bring in a drop-down to select the other account.

Not quite, I can send using the Comcast client (as well as Thunderbird).
I use Comcast mostly, for two emails.
Thunderbird checks the website mailboxes plus my Comcast email. I usually use Thunderbird once a day or two.

Since one has to explicitly tell Thunderbird both the incoming and outgoing server parameters, could Charter possibly have changed any of those items? That would cause Thunderbird not to send.
I had one website server change the mail server parameters years ago. I had to update Thunderbird for it to work.

I use Thunderbird... and do a weekly backup of my eMail; I retain very little of my 'social' email and keep all work related eMail.

Mail on a Mac can be configured to provide notifications for a new email as well. Go into Mail and select preferences from the pulldown tab. As a Mac user I would say you are "fortunate" not to be a Windows user

There is a Gmail app for the iPhone so maybe there is also one for the Mac. On the iPhone a flag appears when a new email arrives

Notice how everyone always speaks highly of what works for them?
"I have/use <insert item here> and love it!"

I speak highly of Firefox...
