Appreciate all the feedback on my LR problem….
Jus one more…I understand that all my pix which are loaded into LR, will not be lost if I stop the monthly charge with Adobe…. If I switch to Adobe Elements 2021, will I still be able to print any of the pix from LR and will I have the same quality if I print from Elements…As I had mentioned all ever done with LR is load and lighten or darken and crop if necessary….
Probably should have never started with LR year’s ago, but……
Thank you

If you made any changes to your photos in Lightroom they will no longer be available to new software unless you export those images from Lightroom.

To attempt to make this more clear. Lightroom DOES NOT change any photo in its Library. It does keep a record of what changes you made to the photo. But this record is only directions for Lightroom to use. So, you will always have the original photos that you "imported into Lightroom" and you can open those photos with any appropriate software. However, they will not have any of the changes you made in Lightroom (lighten, darken, or crop).

You may be able to EXPORT the edited version. But I'm not positive.

Yes you can export the edited versions and by making a minor change in the file name (v1, v2 or name it etc.) you can export it and then put it in the folder with the out of camera version to keep them together. And Elements can then add a link to its catalog from there.

Every time you open an image in LR it pulls up a copy of the OOC from the files (copy, not the file itself), applies any changes in the lrcat file of your edits and puts that on your screen. If you use export it will export a copy of that edited image to where ever you tell it to. Then when you close the image in LR it updates the lrcat file and deletes the working copy of the OOC image it pulled up. The original 1st generation image is still there in your files without any changes what so ever. LR always works with a 2nd generation copy + the lrcat edits.

To post on line I export a copy of the finished edit to my desktop, load it into the on line site from there and then I have a folder of my posted images I move it to so I can keep track of what I have posted.* The folder has sub-folders for each on line site where I post images and if I post an image to more than one (say an image of a bird to multiple birder sites) I put a copy in each site's folder.

*I currently have almost 46,000 images in LR and over the years I have deleted about 30-40% of all shots I took, I still need to delete about that same number of images but it is boring so I am not making much progress. Why so many? A lot of bird images shot on burst to catch movement, wing position etc. I once did almost 300 shots of two ducks fighting in shallow water - the fight lasted about 20-30 seconds and I kept doing 10-15 image bursts as I shifted positions to get a better angle on the action.

Below is a link to a good summary of what you can and cannot do. Surprisingly, you can do a lot.

Is there an 'easy' way to export all edited photos to an external backup disc rather than having to do it individually?

If you are concerned about not having access to your edits made in LR, before cancelling your subscription go into preferences and click on the add XMP files and let it run. This will take all of the edits for each image and put them into an xmp file with the same name as the original image. Many programs including Elements will read this file and show the edited version of your image.
Even if you continue to use LR it is insurance against losing edits should your catalog become corrupted. Any images processed since the last catalog backup and the corruption date will still have the edits embedded and available within the xmp file.

Yes, select them all, either with "control + a" or select all from the Edit menu.

If you need to filter to identify the 'edited' images from all images, use the Metadata filter and add the column for Develop Preset. Every image at 'Default' has not been edited. Select all the others for the edited images.

With the multiple images filtered (or sorted) and selected, Export is available from the File menu, or just right-click on the desktop and select Export.

Many thanks CHG_CANON ! Unable to find how to 'add the column for Develop Preset'. Have tried changing the Default but no option to 'Develop Preset'. Also tried via Edit Preset but again no option to select 'Develop Preset' ?

In the Develop Module, assure you have the Library Filters active, for Metadata. Hover your mouse whatever column is on the far right side of the current filter options (columns). You should get a small icon for 'Add Column'. For that new column, update the filter choice to 'Develop Preset'.

To enabled filters, select from the Library menu / Enable Filters.
To add a Metadata filter, select from the Library menu / Filter by Metadata / Enable Metadata filter. Then repeat to 'add column'.

You do not get the photos from light room as they are on your hard drive. Light room has a file recording the changes you make. The changes are not in/on the original photo. THE OFFICIAL PHOTO IS UNCHANGED ON THE HARD DRIVE. If you want to keep your changes to move to another software, export the photos from light to your hard drive, then you will have two copies, one unedited (the original) and the edited. When exporting I would keep the same file name followed by "edited" so you can't tell which is which and also when sorted by file name they will be together.

Good luck.

What does this mean?
“have some LR PIX ON MY LAPTOP wanted to get them all on my Mac“

LR is not a repository for files it is an index for files stored somewhere.

There are ways to move the repository so that the index is also updated. Lots on line about how to do that. Chgcanon here can help or you can check the LR Queen website she has info on how to do it. Adobe has info as well.
