Smudgey was a Border Collie and my best friend, he raised the bar to a much higher level regarding friendship, loyalty, good manners and intelligence. He was with me for more than 15 years, but in the end he couldn't walk very well, had to wear a diaper at night, and had two seizures. He collapsed three times during one of our last walks. I realized that I was being a selfish friend by trying to prolong his life. The hardest thing I ever did was take him for his last visit to the Veterinarian. I said that I would never have another dog, but there are so many dogs that need to be rescued and find good homes so I adopted Howard A four year old Queens Heeler. Howard has his own personality. Howard was turned into the Humane Society after being hit by a car, and they turned him over to the Arizona Border Collie Rescue. They did extensive surgery on his back leg and he is 90 percent recovered. Howard is one of the most loving dogs that I have ever had and I think Smudgey would be glad that I have Howard.

None will replace Smudgey, but it is good you have room in your heart for another.

I know that, Smudgey was a one of a kind. I try not to compare the two, it's not fair to Howard. Smudgey knew my every move, when he lost most of his hearing, I was able to communicate with hand signals. Smudgey was a really tough act to follow.

Smudgey was a hansom dog; sorry for your loss. I know from personal experience how attached we can get to out 4 legged family members and how much it hurts to lose one. Hopefully Howard will fill the void left by Smudgey's passing. Howard's a pretty hansom dog also.

Sorry for your loss
I have said the same thing after having to have a friend put down.
A while back I was adopted by Murphy about three time the size of buttons, Murphy is still learning at 6-7 yrs old he had no manners and goes wild when he sees his control collar, due to his strength and my old bones it's a must ( he loves a ride in the car) as soon as the collar goes on the leash never tightens!!
He has learned to stay out of the trash, he sits and waits for his fried egg in the morning ( well most of the time) and will wait until I step back from his food bowl before he starts eating. Life is good.
The one thing I miss is being able to have him to walk without a leash it's just not going to happen, He is a Hound!!!!
and one sniff he is on the trail and deaf

When I die I want to go to where dogs go. I live my life by the mantra: "I try to be the person my dogs think I am."

Years ago, when I had to put down my best friend Zella, I thought about getting a new dog and didn't. My reason? I was at the age where the dog might out live me and I didn't want to leave a dog pack less.

Fast forward a few years. One of the Doctors I worked with and his wife raised German Shepherds. They offered me huge discounts on one but, I kept turning them down for the same reason.

My health began to deteriorate and I moved in with my daughter and grandson. As soon as the Doctor's wife heard this, she told me, to come by and pick out my pup. That leaving the dog pack less was no longer an excuse.

That is how we ended up with Princess, 95 lbs of furry love! They had 3 pups for me look at. Princess was the only one we looked at that day. I was love at first sight for the 4 of us and seeing the joy she gives my grandson 'the wait' was one of the best decisions I ever made.
