I don't like getting mail that I just throw away, so I choose online statements. The CC companies encourage this to "help the environment." It also helps them by lowering their costs substantially. Ironically, I still get lots of mail from credit card companies offering special deals. If they want to save on paper and postage, they're not doing a very good job.
The paperwork reduction act and the national do not call list leave a little to be desired.
Going paperless has been quite convenient...except in the bathroom.
I get requests from CC companies and others wanting me to go paperless but I don't do it. Don't have that much faith in the internet. My modem went down recently and it took almost a week for the provider to get a new modem to me. I went to their office to get the modem and install it myself but between the long line and the slow workers it would be faster to wait for the service man to arrive. And I figure let the CC companies pay the postage - the post office can use the money. However, I do use Bill Pay through my bank to pay the CC companies. If the internet goes down I can still mail the payment in.
I've had items lost or late delivered with mail service, but I still use them as well as the internet.
Everyone wants you to go paperless, in an effort to save money. What save? All my bills stay the same, no savings for me.

Saves the companies money on postage, printing, paper and employees.

Where I lived before I got a credit on my monthly water bill if I used my phone to punch in the meter reading every month.
When these companies offer an incentive for me to go paperless I'll consider it. I do auto pay for everything, so I eliminate some paper.

Ahhh, the early 80's and the paperwork reduction act. Knew it well. We went from a 5x8 front and back work request with a consent form included to an 8.5x11 front and back plus another 8.5x11 consent form (front only). Then they added another 8.5x11 if one had sickle cell or alcoholism. Later, they added another 8.5x11 foe AIDS. They later (early/mid 2000) updated the "original" consent to make it worse because it stipulated what and where the images would be used for. (Of course there was the old stand by, medical records, teaching and possible publication in medical literature. Thank God the photo consent was buried in the operating room consent paperwork so I didn't 'splain that to people)
When I get solicitations with no postage due return envelops I block out any personal info and mail the info back to them. That increases their costs and may get them to stop doing it and it helps the USPO by getting them extra fees from the advertiser
Yeah and don't be surprised if you see a "convenience fee" added to your monthly e-statement!

If there is a postage paid return envelope, I always send them back EMPTY.

I seldom return junk mail to the company who sent it. I spread the junk around using envelopes from other companies.
