High Key BIFs

On Friday I spent the morning at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge just north of Ogden, Utah. In processing the shots I noticed a high-key effect. We have a serious smoke problem and the light produced is much like looking into a fluorescent light. The road going around the major marsh places me facing the sun in attempting most BIFs facing into that marsh.

I tried various steps in the post processing of these shots. Please let me know what you think of the backgrounds and any other suggestions or comments you may have.

As aways, downloads give the best view.

TECH NOTES: Sony 100 - 400mm, f/5.6/6.3 G lens with a Sony 2X tc on a Sony a7C body. These shots at 1024mm and ISO 1000.

I like all of them. Maybe no 4 best.
Was a tripod involved?

Thanks, John, I used a monopod. I cannot track BIFs with a tripod. Of course, there is a theory that I cannot track BIFs with anything (LOL).

A great series, Mike. The background is bleh. Don’t know what to suggest, but maybe you can change the sky color, or the water?

I think these are very artistic, particularly the first, except I would remove the partial reflection the lower Rt corner. The yellow and lines bring me to Japanese like art. Any of them would be a nice print. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Barbara, I think the neutral background is what makes high key.

Theory, smeary. These are all nice. And I'm not going to say "for the conditions" either. Anything in the near future indicating an improvement in the local smoke situation?

Thanks, Chief. Things are looking up. We got more rain last night and there is less smoke in the sky. It all depends, however, on what California can do with its fire.
