I've often had better luck with using a gradient blur to give a more realistic image. The steps are:
1. copy layer
2. blur copied layer with filter>blur>Gaussian blur (overdo it and scale back with opacity slider)
3. add mask to above (to paint black over white)
4. add gradient blur
(see some of the youtube videos for more details)

REJ:
Try this - Click on HELP tab; on the drop down menu select Photoshop Help. An DISCOVER window opens up. Scroll down and click on QUICK ACTIONS. Second from the top please find BLUR BACKGROUND.

P.S. Continue with DISCOVER window to have more fun with Photoshop.

Just applying a blur to the selected background doesn't work too well. It'll typically halo your subject.

Here's a process that works:

First image below is the photo as shot. Assume we want a blurrier background.
Second image below is the photo with the background blurred.
Illustration that follow is a screen shot of PS (should work with most raster editors) process applied.

Here's a step by step.

Go to layers palette and duplicate the layer.
Make your selection of the subject on the top layer.
Click the layer mask icon and add a layer mask from the selection.
From the Select menu select re-select.
From the Select menu select Modify -> Expand and add 6 to 10 pixels to the selection (depends on image size).
Click on the bottom layer and from the Edit menu select Fill -> Content Aware.
Deselect the selection.
From the Filter menu select Blur -> Gaussian Blur and dial in the desired amount.
As needed refine the mask on the top layer.
Just applying a blur to the selected background do... (show quote)

Beautiful pictures.

Have you tried that new "Neural Filter" in PS?

I was going to suggest that too. There are a couple of them in the latest version, and adjusting DOF is one. It might be easier than some of the methods above but my initial tests of it suggests some learning needed.
