Need help getting my Epson XP 8600 to print again. Every attempt leads to a filter failed code. I uninstalled and then reinstalled the printer to no avail. I have it tied to a MacOS High Sierra computer. that is also linked to a
HP Envy Photo 7855 printer. Th HP is working fine. One printer (epson) is always loaded with photo paper. Went online for help and for $1.00 one week trial followed by a $48 per month fee they can fix it, they say. It's not worth a $48/month fee. ideas ?

If it's a problem in the printer with a 'filter' in the printer, no matter what you hook it to won't fix it.

Someone can fix it for $48 a month? Really?
After they fix it why would they continue to require $48 a month in perpetuum?
If the printer doesn't cost a lot, why not replace it.
If the printer costs a lot, contact a service center and get an estimate.

Do you have a subscription for the ink?

I know that with my HP printers, mixing store and subscription ink causes it to stop printing.

Oh…and for the HP, ink subscription is very cost effective.

Can you spell S C A M?

Not only is the $48/month plan outrageous, it requires you to give them permission to enter your computer. Do you want to pay them to plant whatever they want into you system?

So, here comes the ever-asked question: Have you called Epson?

A Google search led me to the information behind this link. The discussion highlighted potential driver and or system issues in relation to the filter failed code. There is also discussion on the processes of uninstalling system components and processes. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8284346. I hope this information helps.

Epson printers used to have a "page counter" that would shut the printer down and send a message "printer worn out, replace" after a certain number of pages. It had absolutely nothing to do with the printer actually being worn out. It was just automatically generated after some pre-determined number of pages were handled by the printer.

I had one of those printers and the first time it shut down and gave me the "worn out" message, I did some searches online and found out that this was utter BS. Further, there were little apps that people had written to "reset" the printer's page counter so it would work again. I used on of those and got an additional "lifetime" out of the printer, then a couple years later got a repeat of the same shut down/worn out crap. I reset it again and it worked fine for another couple years... when the shut down/worn out routine happened again. This time I reset it and it worked... but after a relatively short time began to have trouble feeding paper. So after getting more than 3X what Epson wanted me to out of the printer, I finally caved and replaced it (with a Canon printer).

Maybe is one, but I haven't heard about a "filter" in a printer. Maybe something to keep the ink from clogging? If so, a simple cleaning should be able to fix it.

Another thing is that many printers have a little "sponge" somewhere that the printer uses to soak up ink spray, such as when you run a head cleaning cycle. One of my printers used to fill that up to the point it would leave marks on prints. But it was pretty easily accessed to clean (if I recall correctly, I just used some paper towels and rubbing alcohol to get as much ink out of the "sponge" as possible). Maybe that's the filter they're referring to.

It wouldn't make much sense to spend what they're asking on a $250 printer. It sounds like an "extended warranty" service rip off.

Have you asked around wherever you live to see if any local shops do printer service and repairs?

You also might do a Google search and see if other people have encountered the same thing on that particular printer and find out if they were able to find a work-around, like the little app I was able to use on my printer.

EDIT: It appears some of the earlier responses have found some more info online... hopefully you'll find some solutions there.
