I am not a military strategy expert but at least started pulling civilians out months earlier in a slow, orderly fashion. Contact the leaders of the opposing prior to the start of the draw-down and get their assurances that they would allow a peaceful t***sition and withdrawal. Once we were out, they can do as they please. If they did not allow it to happen then we would bomb the hell out of them with all the might and fury of the US military could bring upon them. Rig all military equipment left behind with remote explosives so we could destroy it all if need be instead of giving it away to the enemy. But as I said, I am not a military strategy expert.
