Canon EOS R series Battery Limitations

Just back from a two-week trip to Iceland which is a photographer's paradise. Was limited to the number of photos I dared take due to low battery capacity. If not careful my batteries died in the mid-afternoon. I use a generic battery grip with two Canon batteries. I shoot on manual or semi-manual raw mode. I ended up missing a lot of shots.

In addition, the camera did not recognize my battery grip and shut me down multiple times to protect itself from damage due to non-Canon electrons infiltrating it.

I am very frustrated with Canon and ready to trade in my gear for that of a company that respects the needs of a serious photographer.

Wow, the camera drains batteries that quickly?

Any possibility there may be some user related problems? Canon didn't become the world's number one camera manufacturer by marketing bad cameras and or batteries. Although I don't own an EOS R, I do own over a dozen Canon cameras and I've never had any battery issues. I always carry fully charged spare batteries. They're not that large or heavy. BTW, what are Canon electrons?

A play on words with the "non-Canon" grip not letting them through to the camera.
The batteries were Canon.

That's the problem with mirrorless cameras...their not very battery friendly, new technology isn't always the best technology. They've had had that problem since day one and haven't gotten much better at it.

This is my 5th Canon camera also. I have always loved their products. The batteries aren't "bad" they are just small. My point is that the company is focusing on minimizing weight at the cost of battery life. I believe this is for bragging rights for a lightweight camera. Considering the weight of most of the lenses available for the camera, minimizing battery weight seems to be a poor engineering decision.

1. It is always easier to blame someone else for our own mistakes. Don't blame Canon, if your are a serious photographer, blame yourself for getting a generic battery grip and taking it on a once in a life time trip without thoroughly testing it before taking it.
2. Canon has a documented problem with short lived batteries in the R system. You should have known this, I am sure Canon will address this.
3. I never take any new camera on a once in a life time trip.
I just got back from Iceland, I took my old trusty D850 with two lenses. Below are some of my images. It was a wonderful trip that we hope to take again. I am truly sorry for your experience, but do not blame Canon.

Which R body? Have you used it without the non-Canon grip. Have you set your camera up to conserve battery life? For instance, shorter time out of screens between shots, leaving back screen closed when possible ect? How many shots did you get with two batteries in grip? How much reviewing shots you have taken did you do? I have used an R5 for about a year, and my battery life has been shorter than my previous bodies, but not terrible. Only issue is if using 4K video, it does use a lot more battery. Did you video any?

It's a Chinese knock off battery grip and you had problems with it? OH MY Shame on Canon.

Yup, non-Canon accessories of any type are not the faulty of Canon. Learn from that!

I question going on a trip with not enough batteries. I just bought a Sony RX10IV and bought two extra batteries for it. If I was going on an adventure trip as you did I might buy 3 more depending on charging availability of the batteries.

I am not sure how you can blame Canon.

I have yet to find a non Canon battery grip for the R5 and R6 You never mention which Canon camera you have so I cannot give you any credence to your story, I know for a fact using the R5 and R6 the batteries will last me all day in a temperate climate. I do not shoot videos. Are your doing video?
So many unanswered questions

Wow.
I've had a Vello grip for my Canon for MANY years, never ANY problems.
I'd do it again.

I have no malignity towards buying a camera a few weeks prior to going on vacation.
I actually did it once.
Grant you I probably would not intentionally get one a day or three prior though.

Remember that Manual Mode keeps the camera working a long time, setting up, each shot.

And you didn't know the problems before you go?
