I am thinking of going from Nikon DSLR to Cannon EOS 5 Mirrorless, I have used Nikon for 20 years and am concerned about the learning curve.
Has anyone made the switch?
Thanks

If you're going to join the club ... it's Canon.

The difference in handling is the lenses mount and twist the opposite direction. The RAW files have extension CR2/CR3 rather than NEF. All the historic EF and EFS lenses (electronic apertures with AF) mount and work on the EOS mirrorless models. There's no alphabet soup of guessing which F-mount lens might / might work the same on a mirrorless body. The menus and custom settings are easier to use and establish.

But, even if the EOS R5 changes how you think about photography and think about life, why is making this significant and life-changing change going to change your photography? If it's because there's more RF mirrorless lenses already released and still more announced, right decision. If because there's more overall Canon equipment in the used / resale market, right decision. But, just to change, the Nikon Z-series are excellent cameras and lenses and have you given them all due consideration?

To start you off on your learning curve, it's Canon - not - Cannon.

I have not switched from Nikon, but I know a couple of people who made the Nikon DSLR to Canon mirrorless switch. Both were apprehensive, but said the switch was much easier than anticipated. Since no matter what the brand they all deal with the same things, Aperture, Shutter Speed, Focus, etc. One likened the switch to buying a new car. The windshield wiper switch may be in a different place, but once you are caught in the rain you find it, and then you always know what to do the next time it starts raining.

Good luck!

I have made that switch and then back to nikon. As with anything new, controls and menus never to seem to stay in one spot.

So I did the same thing back in 2006. My first digital Nikon was the D50.. but I wasn't ready to move over to canon. I went through Kodak, then fujifilm mainly due to size and handling limitations. Mind you as a loyal Nikon users, I was disappointed when Nikon never made a small type mirrorless camera. Thus one reason I went canon M6 merely the size was the main draw. What I tell others if they are thinking of making a switch from one brand to another, best try a smaller mirrorless camera made by the manufacture you're interested in. Experiment with older adapted lenses etc.

I was a Nikonista for film cameras. Still have too many, cameras and lenses and extras.
I had used a Canon 6mp a few decades ago, and almost changed teams.
BUT!
My local Silvio's had sales. For @ the same $$ the Nikons had a better bump in mp and accessories.
Canon decided to NOT standardize their APS-H chip. Boo!
And then the reviews ....
The Canons had a problem with light leaks thru the viewfinder and affecting the pictures.
The Canons had a problem with light leaks thru the viewfinder and overheating the electronics.
The Canons had other problems with light leaks thru the viewfinder, and would SELL a plastic clip to block the light.
And I had a bucket or three of excess Nikon stuff.
So I got a D80 (still do), and a D200 (ditto, and then ... and then ..
Well, you know.

Guess the old spots and long-resisted recall of the D600 doesn't count against Nikon?

In a perfect world, the ideal camera system would be Canon lenses and Nikon bodies - at least as far as DLSRs are concerned. For mirrorless, the king is still Sony.

The ideal world has been here for a long time, their called EOS R5 cameras in a generally wonderful mirrorless world ...

It is true that Nikon is playing catch up. But now that, Sony first, and Canon following slowly Sony's lead, Nikon is catching up.
That is the trouble with being first, others soon follow.
The reason for the above statements is this,
"if your not getting the results you want with Nikon", you are NOT going to get better results with Sony or Canon.
Only through study and practice can you improve. Never switch brands thinking that brand will sharpen and better your images, IT WILL NOT.
If you have several Nikon lenses, Nikon offers an excellent adapter that will allow you to shine with their mirrorless camera system.
I currently shoot Nikon and Sony mirrorless, I get no better results with Sony than with Nikon.
However, I can arrange my images better seeing the exposures before I shoot with Sony, but if I had the adapter for my Nikon lenses I could do the same with the Nikon mirrorless camera's.
Many have stated that for stills the best is still the Sony A1, for video the best is the Canon R5.
But what does BEST mean, it means that if you are really good and take really good images now you will continue to take outstanding images with mirrorless.
Again, do not switch if the only reason your switching is you think your images will improve with mirrorless, THEY WILL NOT.
And don't fall for non sensical words written by those that espouse Canon, they are only empty words written by a frustrated photographer.

They were both happy with the move, but said there was no dramatic difference in the results. The big improvement was that, as often happens, they were shooting more. Going back to the new car metaphor, when you buy a new car you find more reasons to drive somewhere.
