Which is better?

I'm entering a friendly, no prize photo competition.

Theme: 'illustrate this poem'.

****

To my delicate F.

Having dazzled my hazel eyes for days,
Sitting atop your stalk of shamrock green shades,
Ready to retire.
Fragile fabric foregrounding fantasies,
I thank you for flowering for me.

****

In other words: Take a photo of a flower that has passed her prime.

Which is the better of these two that illustrated the theme?

Second. Good contrast with the younger fresher coming from behind to replace tells a better story..
Very nice.

First one. In the second one the red flower distracts from the main subject

neither as the images are too dark and the subject isn't will identified. Remember, you know its a wilted dry flower, but those looking at the picture need to also know what it is. So you need to convey what the subject matter is. Otherwise it looks like a rotten egg.

Those looking at the image will be those who are also participatiing in the fun competition and so will know what they are looking at. Only the background is dark and thus making the image stand out and more dramatic. If you think it looks like a rotten egg then there might be something wrong with your eyesight.

Yes, I tend to agree with you but it's interesting to see what others think.
