Thanks! Actually, three, and since the oldest boy, a Lab, is ancient, (though still trundling along happily) possibly a puppy in the Fall. I can't be without dog friends.
we are too old to care for another dog............the first time in almost 70 years we do not have one to love.
Possibly the biggest mistake in my life is that when my first dog had to be put down due to disease, I wasted 5 years without another. I absolutely understand your situation, odds are good that the new pup can out live me. My wife is a good bit younger, and my kids have dogs and love mine as well. They could certainly care for the boys. If I were in town or in a situation where I was actively worried about my health / mortality I would adopt an older small breed from a shelter. I will by gosh have dogs till I pass, having made sure they will be o.k. after. All the best to you!

I do not have any relative on this earth. My husband has an older brother......we have no one who we could trust to care for a dog.
I am not in the least upset! I am sad without our dog.....he refused his dinner....at 5.30...at 5.45 I saw he was in pain....we were at the Vet ten minutes later. a scan showed his spleen was 1 huge mass and 1/2 his stomach had been invaded. They put him down within minutes...........
we are still in shock. he was playing ball with Dad at lunchtime that day..

That is so sad. I know what that does to a person. I had a beautiful, extremely affectionate long haired Persian Cat who stayed by my side constantly after my Wife was called Home after her battle with cancer, that just laid next to her breakfast one morning and moaned with her eye's closed. I took her to the vet right away and found out she was in a lot of pain due to congested heart failure. I held her in my lap while they put her down, and I cried like a baby wondering what she was thinking when that happened. That was a terrible day. God bless all of our pet companions.
Any Dog person knows just how smart and multi lingual their friends are. I think there is more than even we can imagine. The Big Guy, showing a little age.
I think a man once said, "if dogs don't go to heaven, I don't want to go there". I have often wondered just what any of my pets were thinking when they just sat next to me or on my lap and looked me right in the eyes. You have some beautiful, loving looking dogs. Wish I still had room for another German Shepherd.
