Just try pulling yourself off the floor to float in the air by grabbing your shoe tops and pulling up. It is a complete denial of Newtonian gravity. But then, maybe it can happen in weightless outer space. There os no such thing as a completely "self made man."

From your link:
"So when it became a colloquial phrase referring to socioeconomic advancement shortly thereafter, it was meant to be sarcastic, or to suggest that it was an impossible accomplishment."

Correct, but as the article stated, "eventually, however, the phrase’s commonly-accepted meaning evolved, and now when we tell people to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps,” it’s implying that socioeconomic advancement is something that everyone should be able to do—albeit something difficult."

"Operation Bootstrap" was an economic development program to transform Puerto Rico from an agricultural to an industrial economy. More recently the name has also been applied to other economic development programs. Nothing sarcastic about that.
