Cicada Eradication

For those who were in the 17 year cicada brood area, you might consider importing some of these guys to help suppress the noise - A Cicada Killer Wasp. This lady has been preparing her burrow next to my sidewalk for the last few days. This morning I caught her hauling a load of soil out of the burrow to deposit it on the pile of fresh dirt you see mounded outside her hidey hole. She went about her business with nary a glance as I fumbled for my iPhone to get this shot. She is about the length of my thumb (2 inches).

I had at least a dozen such burrows in my back lawn at my house in Texas each summer. But this is first one I’ve seen here in Tennessee. Which is a bit odd since I’ve not seen any cicadas in my neighborhood. But I’m sure if any are around this girl will find them, sting them and drag them into her burrow for her larvae to feast on till they’re ready to leave the nest.

Very good. These wasps are large, but all should know they are really indifferent to humans. There is no need to fear them.

That is true. I forgot to mention that.
