Hi,
I am a mom who is attempting to take her kids pics, in order to save money having them taken professionally. I love photography but am not educated on the how to's of it. I have a canon rebel slr camera. I recently bought a 50mm 1.8f prime lens. Any suggestions when taking photographs both indoors and outdoors?
Thanks. Colleen.

the above suggestions are all very good..also learn your camera and lens, learn to look for light and how it will effect your shot..there are tons of online tutorials, short vids, etc , not to mention websites like this one that will help you..the main thing though I think is to shoot some pics on different settings in different lighting and see how they turn out..getting closer to your subjects is also probably gonna be some good advice for you..help you eliminate some unwanted background distractions..good luck
You can read volumes about basic courses in taking good pictures.
As mentioned by some above members, you need to have some basics and most of all feel comfortable with your camera. It is only a tool (like a paint brush) that will do what you make it do. You are the creator of your work. I would learn about how light hits your subject (light is what gives your pictures character and the look you want). If your camera is automatic, try the apeture mode and set the lens wide open (1.8) and do a portrait. The subject will be clear and detailed as the back round will be creamy and out of focus. A colored leafy backround can have a nice effect behind your subject. Experiment with all different settings and soon you will know what your camera can do for you.
Never have fear of trying different ways to take pictures.
You never mentioned what is wrong with your photographs. It would be eaiser to give advise if one knew what the problem was.
