I saw this online last night. Many of us have that small spare tire that's mounted upside down in the trunk. Checking air pressure isn't easy - unless you get one of these. The guy online used a 10" hose, so I'll have to see if 8.25" is long enough. Ideally, that depression in the trunk is large enough to hold a full-size spare.

By the way, there has been a recall on the plastic jacks used in some recent GM cars, so if you have a jack made of plastic (What were they thinking?), check with your dealer. If you like gadgets, I saw this one last night. Interesting - and not expensive.

What in the design that doesn't allow the spare to be placed stem up?

The system for bolting it into place requires it to be positioned like that. You could probably flip it over, but then it could rattle around. It would eventually wear a large hole in the floor. The tire would fall out, and the car behind you would run over it. That would cause the driver to lose control and suffer serious injuries. The lawsuit would ruin you.

Back at my one job we had a phrase we used a lot...
"If I was on the design review board..."

Had an accessory kit “Remote Spare Tire Fill Valve” for a 1948 Chevrolet. Same idea, but it allowed you to check and fill the spare without opening the trunk. Of course you had to drill a hole in the body (never did that) and as a result it remained unused.

I'll have to check that out. I check the pressure on the spares regularly and it's a pain. But having a flat spare is a bigger pain if you don't know about it until you need it.

Same happens on my car, and I think it's unbelievable that someone design that, and others approved it.

“Ideally” the depression could hold a full-sized spare. Depressing, but probably not.

Mine came with a can of stop leak and an air compressor. No jack.

Actually, quite by accident I found out that my 2018 CR-V actually will take a full size spare. I accidentally knocked a small plastic piece at the rear of the spare tire compartment loose; that got me to wondering. The small plastic screw down that rotates around the tie down post is double ended, one side is for space saver and the other for "full-size spare". Also the cover has two positions, lower for the mini-me spare and higher to accommodate a full-size tire. I don't see this documented.

Right! I could run a hose right up to the dash.

I checked that space for the spare, and I think a regular tire will fit.
