For sunsets or scenes like the grand canyon where one side is in the shade and the other in the sun. I want to add to my tools a 100 mm, 2 or 3 slot square filter holder system with 2 and 3 stop hard and soft ND Grad filters and perhaps a solid 10 stop ND filter. I do have a Tiffen 2-9 variable ND that works very well but is a stand alone filter. Problem is I also want to be able to use a CPL with that square filter system. Any suggestion as to what manufactures will accommodate CPL in one of the slots. All my lens I will use it with are 77mm lens thread and the Nikon 17-35mm f 2.8 the most probable lens I will use. I acquired an old Cokins system (never used) that has 2 slots and a 65x70 ND grad filter and a CPL that can be inserted into the second slot but have not found that in a 100mm system. Also is it possible to screw on my lens first, a CPL then the 77mm adapter for the square filter system, snap on the filter holder then drop in the grad filter. B&H was not too much of a help. Any suggestions would be appreciated !!~

Not the cheapest but I have a Lee system that attaches to the front of your lens that also could be over a CPL. That system holds the GND filter.

I too have this Lee system. The CPL is huge and does a really nice job. The filter holder will hold up to 3 ND filters or other filter.

All the top systems will do what you are asking, and it probably comes down to reading reviews and finding out what fits your style and budget.

I spent a good 4-6 months looking at all the systems and decided that the Wine Country Camera filter system was the one for me. I have been thoroughly impressed with it and love the design, filters, and the cost (currently 20% discount from sellers website).

It isn't the cheapest system on the market, but everything is quality built and very sturdy.

Check out the Nisi V6 system. The holder holds a Nisi circular polarizer and slots for 100mm filters. The holder is designed so a GND can be used for side light blending as well as top and bottom.

There are some good videos that show the different features. Check them out.

I am very please with my V6.

Does the Lee system go over my existing CPL or does it drop into the square holder?

The square filter holder would mount over top of your CPL.

I would test check each individual filter (alone) on your camera to check the results adding all those filters at one time or not testing the filters before hand, they may or may not work with your system. Because NONE of the filters we've tried did not work on my camera (I'll not go into details about it or argue with others about it) I was obsessed with having a polarization filter on my camera, I created one myself.

You didn’t say what lens you were using this on. Stacking the cpl and the filter adapter might cause some vignetting with wideangle lenses. If it works with a normal lens then it would also work with telephotos.

If circumstances allow, you might eliminate the thickness of the adapter and simply hold the plastic filter in front of the lens. As long as it is flat against the edge of tbe cpl mounting ring you’ll have no internal reflectiont problems. But you might need a third hand or need a tripod.

I used to use 4” (100 mm) gelatin filters in a bellows lens hood. Though more fragile, they were a bit less in price than the plastic Cokin filters, when that system came out.

I would recommend gelatin filters, but I just checked B&H and see that, at over $86 each, they are still available—but at 15 to 20 times the price I paid ! The optical quality is top rate, but it seems the price is at the top rate, too!

Primarily this lens will be used with the Nikon 17-35mm f2.8 as mentioned in the original question. However it might be used with Nikon 24-120 f4 and the 70-200 f2.8 . . All have 77mm lens threads

Lee has a ring you attach to the front of the bracket for a 105 mm CPL filter. I gave up on buying Lee's CPL since they were always out of stock so bought a Heliopan (over $400 at the time). That was worthless as a little pressure on the CPL pops the entire bracket off the lens ring. GRRR! I wrote to Lee about this and sent the bracket and Heliopan CPL to Lee's rep in California. A couple of weeks later I got it back and he said it was all good but it did the same thing. I gave up using the CPL and don't use the filter system that often these years. I think the bracket should lock on to the ring nice and tight so it won't pop off so easily.

I'm not 100% satisfied because when I use a 10 stop ND I have to adjust the sharpness first and with this system I got so far the best results because the square filter I can but on after I adjusted the sharpness. But I have to be careful to do so.The CPL is magnetic and goes first in or can use by it self.
