Last week I bought a shooting rest not a real high dollar piece but not cheap either, But It would not hold my eleven pound Ar upright at all!!! the fore end clamps were too short and flimsy, Soooooo only 6 hrs work and a few dollars later, ( Damn Aluminum has gone up) 3"X3"x1/4"- 30"long $28, they didn't have 3/8" so I used two pieces for each upright.
I gave the lathe and the mill a little workout.
The clamp pad guide pin holes are slotted so the pads can angle a little if needed, the pads are cut from a horse stall pad, No it wasn't used
The adjusting screw threads were Heli-Coiled to reduce wear on the Aluminum.
I may bead blast and paint them at a later date, and maybe not!!
The Rest gained about pound which, don't hurt a thing
It looks good, Frank. This brings back memories of all the bench shooting I did in my teens and twenties, primarily with .222s and 243s, along with other calibers.
As long as it works and you are happy with it then it was worth it.

Thank you John
Back when I started shooting Rest like this were rarely seen, it was usually sand bags an 4"X4" and the sand bags leaked dust!!!!

It should work very well , it might take a little adjusting so the clamps don't hold the fore end too tight.
That is an impressive rig, Frank. My Caldwell is simple and sturdy. I either use weights or bolt it to the shooting table.

If it's not too hot Thursday I'll probably give it a test.
I have a Caldwell lead sled and its useless for an AR.

I have not had a problem, what is your difficulty?

Mags. hit the top rail and the butt is too loose in the holder that's not adjustable, plus you can't adjust the length for shorter rifles.
The only thing good about it (for me) is I got for a song and a dance
Clever guy! And a good craftsman.
Well done!
Cheers,
Don
Very well done, Manglesphoto. Regarding prices, the prices have not gone up....the value of the dollar has lost buying power so it takes more dollars now to buy the same item than it did before. Unfortunately for us older folks, inflation is a tax against our savings.

I enjoy shooting my 308 M1A. I also shoot the NRA 50 .22 matches. Great fun. If you want a challenge shoot a break barrel air rifle at 25yards. You have to unlearn everything you know about rifle shooting. Definitely something to do in the back yard for kicks.
