So then, the consensus is to use a charger that is specific to the brand of battery being used?
I have had good service with Newmowa. Purchased from Amazon.
I've had Wasabi batteries for years with no problems like you mentioned.

I needed a back-up battery for my Nikon Coolpix A1000. Nikon's EN-EL12 battery has been on backorder for months and Nikon can't provide any information as to when they will be back in stock. In desperation I ordered an Everyready battery but that wouldn't take a charge. Based on favorable comments from Hoggers, I then ordered a Wasabi. After fully charging it, I took it for a test drive. After just 48 snaps, it was completely discharged. B&H carries two other brands: Jupio and Watson. Adaroma carries Green Extreme and Power 2000, as well as Jupio. Does anyone have any experience with any of these?

I use Watsons in my SONY a6300, a6000 and RX10 with no remarkable problem but I have not made a controlled comparison.

I have used both Wasabi and Watson with good results from both.

I don't know what to say. I would recommend to buy new Nikon battery but it's back order. If I am the OP I just wait until I get the Nikon battery.

Not EN-EL12, but I have a Nikon P900 which uses EN-EL23 batteries; I had trouble with Wasabi batteries in it, but Power 2000 batteries seem to work fine. Never had any trouble with Wasabi batteries in either of my Canon or Panasonic cameras, only the Nikon.
I usually stick with OEM batteries, however, during the pandemic there seemed to be a supply shortage or delay up here in Canada. I ended up with a few third-party batteries no only for the camera but the flags unts, trigger/slave systems and other items. I found that some of the third-party cells worked as well as the original brands and some fell slightly short as to exposures or flashes per charge. Oddly enough, some of the third-part batteries of the same brand performed differently which leads me to suspect a small quality control issue.
If the battery only holds a charge for 30 odd exposures, there's definitely something wrong- a defective battery, an incompatible or defective charger, or malfunction or setting in the camera that is diminishing battery performance.
It can be difficult, without a milliampere meter and knowing how to employ it, in series with the battery and the charger, to see if the charging rate is correct and if the charger is prematurely shutting off or switching to trickle-charge. Check to see if the battery and the contacts in the camera are clean. Make sure the amper/hour rating of the OEM and third-party batteries are the same, although there should not be THAT MUCH of a difference.
At the end of the day, since I use my equipment on a daily basis, I am resigned to the fact that ALL batteries, OEM and after-market brands can unceremoniously drop dead at the most inopportune times and all I can do is carry many spares. If I am limited to unknown brands, I just buy more. I know this sounds crazy but as we all know, for most of us, the days of the fully mechanical camera are over and if the power goes down...y'all know what happens.

I have used Watson, Wasabi and currently BM rechargeable batteries. They all worked fine in my Nikon cameras. My first rechargeable batteries were the Eveready ones. They were the only ones to not hold a charge. They were also the most expensive, but there were 3 batteries and 3 recharging slots, so that was good. It was several years ago that I bought them so they may have improved their quality since then. But my BM have been working great in my Nikon cameras. Hold a charge as well as or better than my Nikon ones.
You apparently got a defective battery. Return it. I use batteries from Wasabi, Watson, Kastar, PowerExtra and B&M in various cameras and havenβt had any problems with any of them. The one battery that died was a Nikon battery

I've had Power 2000 batteries that worked, and others that would not make contact with the camera contacts.
I use mostly Wasabi batteries in my Lumix, but charge them in a Wasabi dual charger powered with a 10-Watt USB charger (both in car and on AC at home). They work fine.
Wasabi has worked well for me.

Maybe the problem is with your charger?
Or camera itself. I hav3 used Wasabi and Watson - never an issue.
I have used Watson brand for more than a decade. They work just as well as OEM and hold a charge longer than OEM. The only battery that ever failed me was OEM
