At the risk of being lambasted (wouldn't be the first time). I don't see any hearing protection. Do the cartridges emit no noise? Do the horses go deaf? I'm just curious. When I go to the range EVERYBODY wears ear protection.
Yes, the shots are loud. I was wearing ear protection as almost every spectator was. I asked about the horses and was told by a competitor that the horses do have noise protection.

Great! We got to see that at the Big E several years ago. Was a first for us!

Nice type of event to get action shots. For those not familiar with this sport ... The riders move through a series of balloons as fast as they can. They must shoot the balloons in a particular order and their ride is timed. Think of Barrel Racing ... with guns! No they're not shooting bullets, it's some sort of wadding. Anyone familiar with this sport is welcome to add more details. One more point, those horses are magnificently trained! They have gunshots going off right along side of their heads and show no reaction. They are wearing some sort of noise protection, but still ...

WoW, Howard, that’s a real thing! What a JOB!
Nice action shots. Not something you see every day. I'm feeling a little iffy on the health of the horses. I hope they have some sort of hearing protection.
Never of that sport, but keep on lookout for local venues. Nice shots.

Nice action shots! That last one shows the classic horse’s running stride to perfection!

In photos 2 and 7, it appears that the special rounds have a scatter shot pattern to them which would certainly improve safety for the spectators. At the same time they improve the probability of breaking the balloons. It reminded me of the Paul Harvey report I heard many years ago about Annie Oakley and her sharpshooting ability. According to Paul Harvey she used bullets with wax slugs formed around BBs so the wax melted, when the bullet was fired, and the BBs would spread out to improve the probability of hitting and breaking her targets.
Great captures. Very interesting.
