Built for the Commonwealth Railways (Australia) between 1970 and 1972 these standard gauge CL locomotives were given a new lease of life when they were "re-manufactured" in 1992. I captured the following photos in June 2014 when CLP16 "Murunitja" (an aboriginal name) and CLP8 "City Of Port Augusta" were in charge of a ballast train during a stop-over in Alice Springs.
On the same day on an adjacent track Pacific National NR45 and a second NR in "The Ghan" livery are being prepared for the 1,329 km (826 miles) passenger service from Alice Springs to Adelaide.

The "P" in the locomotive designation stands for Passenger. During remanufacturing of the CL class locos in 1992, 10 were rebuilt as CLP for passenger services and 7 were built as CLF for freight operations.

The CLP units included additional head-end power required for lighting and air conditioning of passenger carriages which the CLF units did not need for freight train operations.

Would be most interested in hearing a little bit about your Avatar (profile picture). It looks like a big diesel engine and as you might guess those interest us...okay, me.
