Microfiber plus my steamy breath, and if that’s not enough, the Zeiss lens wipes.

I’ve used plain old liquid soap and water to clean eye glasses and wiped with a paper towel. Been working for 50 plus years.

You're getting ripped off. A box of 100 of those at Walmart is less than $6. You're paying almost $15 per hundred.

I have used Zeiss, Hoodman, Nikon and now for several years I have been using these from Joseph Cristina. They are by far the softest silky smooth material. No residue. Clean crisp after use.

Only clean your optics with a solvent when a Rocket blower or soft brush doesn't accomplish the task.
Modern optics typically have special coatings to counter flare, glare etc.
These coatings can be damaged by strong solvents and aggressive frequent cleaning.

I've had excellent success with Zeiss Lens wipes which come precoated...
But I only use them are seriously soiled lenses...
Here is what Zeiss uses in their Lens Wipes...

btw, I also downloaded the OSA data sheet on Zeiss Liquid lens cleaner...
It is the most pricey alcoholic beverage ever put on the market...
The Zeiss Liquid lens cleaner is only 3% ethanol in an aqueous solution... Yep, that pretty pricey Vodka... lol

Hope this helps plumbbob1
All the best with your glasses and your photographic journey...
Only clean your optics with a solvent when a Rocke... (show quote)

So dilute vodka might do the trick? I think I’ve got some around somewhere 😀

Make your own eyeglass cleaner and then put it in a spray bottle.

My Optician suggested something like the following instead of buying it from him:

I remember watching a YouTube video of a guy who suggested that most of the time a camera lens can be cleaned with a Q-Tip and a little distilled water. Obviously, this won't work if the glass has grease or a lot of crud on it. Most of the time the Rocket blower works fine for me, but I generally keep a UV filter on my lenses.

NOOOOO! Dont use any facial tissue. Those fibers are really scratch on the coatings used on expensive lens. Microfiber that is made specifically for camera lens please

As an eyeglass wearer, learned long time ago not to clean my glasses with Kleenex (tissue). It is a paper product made from wood pulp and because of this will scratch the glass. Clean your lenses and glasses with material from a clean, soft, 100% cotton Tee Shirt.

I use Zeiss or Nikon as they seem to be the same. I like the individually sealed sheets rather than something that could have picked up dirt.

1. Air brush with an air bulb. I use the Rocket Blower.
2. If persistent particles remain a quality ultra soft camel brush applied lightly to dislodge the particles.
3. Then clean with a Microfiber cloth.
2 & 3 should be done applying lightly.
I've never had a problem this way.
Applying solvents such as alcohol, not a good idea. We don't know how the alcohol will react with the upper layers of the coatings.

I was just told by my optometrist not to clean glasses with Nikon alcohol wipes. Should that also apply to camera lenses?

That is right !! I used Nikon lens wipes on my glasses and the wipe produced micro scratches in the coating. I had to have the lenses recoated. I don't see anything amiss on my Nikon lenses but I use them carefully and sparingly as Thomas says.

My favorite method is wipe my glasses under warm water with a wash clothe and wipe dry with a diaper (mine from my mother's rag bag - 75 year old cotton and the softest cotton known to mankind).
I use Nikon lens wipes but after blowing off loose debris and then only with a very light touch.

I use Zeiss, sparingly. Kleenx and breath works most of the time.
