Had an afternoon appointment in Billings that I guessed would take a couple of hours. Doubted I'd have time for photos, and it was supposed to crack 100°, so decided to bring the D2X, senior and least costly camera. Put it in a little zip up six pack cooler on the passenger seat along with a thick white towel for insulation. Was driving my just overhauled 2005 Hemi Dodge Magnum, cruising along an open access 70 mph state highway. A fellow in a foreign unidentifiable blew past me, (get thee behind me Satan) I didn't downshift and blow him away. I glanced at the scenery, and saw brake lights, he was turning, just after passing, and from close to 80. Full panic stop. New brakes and old but still quickish reflexes worked. Camera bounced off the dash into the footwell, Stetson went wherever. Pulled into a driveway, tested on the spot. Camera, lens, hood unbroken, worked perfectly and not even a crack in the dash! I think any of my other Nikons, ex. possibly the D3 would have been harmed. Back to keeping the case in the footwell! A couple of shots when I got home, both as a further test, and because I don't use the great old camera enough.
You should use it more often.

Thank you! It is actually possible to have too many fun cameras. I was pretty good till I bought a few great older ones for not a lot of $.

Many thanks! The camera still tough, as for myself, not like former days!

I had a similar experience about a year ago. Driving a curvy country road at night when a deer ran across the road right in front of me. I jammed the brakes and my camera bag slipped off the rear seat to the floor. Nothing was damaged, but now I keep the bag on the floor so it can't fall in a panic stop.

Mostly on my photo jaunts, or even on the road, little traffic, and since I'm rolling slowly looking for wildlife, few surprises. When just travelling, usually the Wife driving, a camera in hand, bag in the foot well and a second on the floor behind her seat where I can reach it. This was a real wake up. Can't remember the last stop like this one. Got lucky!
I've had so many idiots speed past me only to pull off at the next exit (close by) - I guess in their small minds they need to show off, not caring about anything else.
Nice shots, QD.
Lucky your head didn't hit the windshield and pox on that driver who caused that dilemma!!

Thanks! I need to be more idiot aware! I suppose the percentages aren't too different, but they are fewer in number out here!
