Tony Northrup has a video on Nikon's announcement of the Z9, which will be their top sports camera. One comment that most people will not like - the "best" cameras from Nikon (D6) and Canon (1D) do not give the best picture quality. Their goal is speed.

If you have the time. Have the camera on tripod. Focus carefully. I don't think the D6 can beat the D850 nor the 1D can beat the 5DIV.

The top models also have the brand's best implementation of their AF tracking. The same programming of the 1DXIII is reflected in the 5DIV, but the EOS 1DXIII has the benefit of a integrated battery pack and a second dedicated processor specifically to drive the AF system. So, the images may not be 'better' for base ISOs, but what you can capture with that FPS 'speed' and AF tracking should be different.

So it's true that those top models were optimized for speed and not so much for image quality. If your subject isn't in a hurry going somewhere the top model doesn't perform better than the second from top. The second from the top is usually the one that has the best image quality.

I guess since they haven't been using the highest res sensors in those cameras, there is probably some truth to that.

But the difference in quality from one camera to another is getting smaller all the time.

Both of those cameras went with lower MP sensors (20.8 and 18.1 MP respectively) for speed.

The Z9 was reportedly tested with 45, 50 and 60 MP sensors. It is currently rumored they will go with the 45 MP sensor (remains to be seen). It is also rumored that it will be 30 frames per second in addition to having 8k video, if you're into that.

Unless every picture you take is destined to be enlarged beyond 20x24 and viewed closer than 2 feet (does anybody?) megapixels beyond 20 are really overkill. I’ll take speed, focus accuracy and low noise over “image quality” any time.

Picture quality depends heavily on the skill of the photographer.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Photographic skill and knowledge outweighs camera specifics every time.
All of todays camera's have shutter speeds, aperture, and ISO settings, and all of today's digital camera's can produce great images. You are very, very, very wrong in your assumptions.

Jerry, my friend, I hate to say this, but you are way out of you knowledge base here. Judging a camera is best done with personal experience not reading other people's opinions. The MOST IMPORTANT part of ANY camera, is the computer that is a couple inches behind the viewfinder! Best of luck.

With many cameras there is nothing a couple of of inches behind the viewfinder. Just thin air.
