Panoramic photos with Nikon D5100

Does anyone know if there is a way to shoot panoramic photos with the Nikon D5100? I've checked the manual and menus and don't see anything on this topic. I don't want to stitch them in Photoshop, but could I suppose. Just not sure it would be worth all the work without stitching software.

I take panoramics of landscapes all the time and photomerge the pictures in photo shop. I do not own a D5100 but it does not have stitching software within camera, as some cameras do, including some point and shoots.

I use photoshop CS5 extended to stitch my photos --I take a snap shot of a finger before the first picture in the panorama ( whether horizontal or vertical ) then I shoot the first pictures, second picture overlapping 20 per cent, third and so on.... The I snap a pic of a finger again, marking end of that bunch of pictures to be stitched (photo-merged in photoshop -- fast and easy).

Regarding, D5100

Ditto to stiching in photoshop. CS5 is what I use and it usually works great. Much better than cropping a wide-angle lens shot, plus you get a lot more resolution out of the stitched version.

I assume you are using a tripod then to get an easier stitch?

Microsoft ICE is a free program that does a good job combining photos into a panorama.

Windows Live Gallery contains a free stitcher that I have used with some success.

Panioramas - while you can hand-hold you increase you change of parallax stitching error. The topic is much too extensive to try to summarize here. Here are two good discussion of the subject:

Stitching - depending upon how serrious you want to get about panorams - look at PTGui which may be the most widely used stitching program world-wide, don't know but... They offer 30 day free trial. At least look at the tutorials and support.

Another consideration for panoramas and stitching - you shoot a row of pictures at eye level. Then you shoot a row high and another row low. You wind up with a huge, mulit-dimensional panorama. I've never tried this.

PSE 10 pano program is very forgiving-even if the shots are out of order. Panning for panos hand held works well with a steady hand.

I've never used a tripod for panos.

Most, if not all, of those in the 360 site are pros at it. They started somewhere. You can too.

It is really easy to stitch panos together in CS5. I had never done any, and when we were at the Grand Canyon, I tried some. I overlapped about 50% on five frames, and the results were amazing.
