Im about 10 miles from Galveston bay, where many shrimp boats come in and sell their catch at local shops....so the shrimp I get were swimming in the bay yesterday. Although I do buy 10 or 15 pounds at a time, usually have a 3 pound shrimp boil that first day and have leftovers for the next day....freeze the remainder in one pound packages.
Funny how all the shrimp shops are now run by Vietnamese. they seem to have taken over the shrimping in this area.
I can get decent fresh at a Specialty Fish Market the restaurants use, but since I'm going to freeze it anyway, I get big bags of frozen. I can recall being at Padre Island for a conference years ago. One of the guys was local and had a boat. We went out to a Shrimper with a case of Lone Star and came back with a lot of live shrimp in a burlap bag. Tasty! People don't realize how shrimp can jump! Have to refrigerate a while so you can cook them.
