The problem is, in some cases, you've given your CC number to buy product A. Products B, C and D are "free trials" included with your purchase. So you've given them your CC number as well as authorized them to charge it when the "free trial" expires. Very sneaky stuff they do somewhere in the fine print you don't read but still check the box saying you did.

Be vewy vewy careful when ordering.

This is one of many scammy things that regularly come our way. Another is when you try to cancel a subscription, and you can't b/c all instructions to do so absolutely do not match what you see on the computer. 'Round and round you go.

There was a discussion recently about giving a CC number for a free trial. I just had an experience like that. My calendar was marked to cancel Parallels Toolbox for Windows this week. I had no record of buying/trying that. Just now, I received an email from them telling my my $22 payment was due. Since the CC company changed my account number, they couldn't charge me. Looking on their site, I saw that their program came with several other "free" programs when I bought Paintshop Pro exactly one year ago. If the CC number hadn't been changed, I'd have to try to cancel that payment. As it is, I'm not able to sign in to their site to cancel my account.

One of the best quotes I've ever seen was either coined or passed on by one of our members here on UHH:
It went something like this: If you see a free offer, the product is you.

My CITI card offers a virtual account number. The merchant doesn't see my credit card information. I use it when I do a trial offer or a merchant I'm not familiar with. I can set the amount and / or time the card is good for. No more trying to remember to cancel trial offers.

The bank canceled and reissued the card months ago, so they can't charge me.

A common misconception regarding accounts that tell you you must cancel by a particular date to avoid further charges. Many merchants will check the box on their initial charge claim to the bank that says "recurring." They don't have to tell you that. Since the account is labeled "recurring", the bank will simply transfer the charge over to the new credit card number and send you the monthly statement for payment. You have to make a formal cancellation with the company in writing to avoid charges.
