Route 209 follows the Delaware River through the Water Gap national park and there are several stops for trails along the way. All are free. First stop could be a left turn at Creek Road (just past the Bushkill Meeting House and just before the traffic light) A short walk into the woods is an active beaver pond. Further north is Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) which has a large pond with several walking trails and an environmental museum. Then comes Hornbeck Trail which is a relatively easy walk along the creek back to an area called the Coliseum, a natural amphitheater carved out by the creek over millennia. Along the trail, if you look closely, you can see foundations of old camps. You need to stop at Dingmans Falls. There is a boardwalk through a natural area where you can see Ribbon Falls, and then Dingmans Falls. You can walk to the top of the falls, but can't go further since Childs Park is still closed from storm damage a couple of years ago. Stop at Dingmans Ferry access area to get a picture of the Dingmans Bridge, one of less than a dozen privately owned toll bridges left in the country. Further north along Route 209 is Raymondskill Falls (tallest waterfalls in Pennsylvania). (Bushkill Falls is a privately-owned attraction with an admission fee and outside the park). The trip ends in Milford, a nice village with lots of places to eat dinner to end the day. As an aside, if you are bringing bicycles, there is the McDade Trail, a relatively flat trip from Shawnee (mentioned earlier) to Milford, about 32 miles. There are many places to park and then hike or ride parts of the trail. (I live just outside the Water Gap park, so know both sides of the river pretty well.) As another aside, the tallest waterfall in New Jersey is Buttermilk Falls (the Jersey falls, not the ones on Route 209 in Pa.) which is in the national park. Hope this helps... There are plenty of state-owned "game lands" in the Poconos as well as state parks and, of course, Pocono Raceway where NASCAR runs a couple of races each year.

Route 209 follows the Delaware River through the W... (show quote)

About 15 minutes west of Milford on Hwy. 6 is Shohola Falls. While not impressive in height, it is a nice falls to visit with a number of rocks that can be climbed on to get shots mid-stream. In Stroudsburg there is the Steam Town railroad museum which is quite impressive. In the Eckersley Village Coal Mine you will be taken underground and see what real coal mining is like -- very excellent experience.

The area around Milford, PA has Bushkill Falls, Dingmans Falls, Raymondskill Falls, and Shohola Falls among others. Right across the road from Raymondskill Falls is the trail head for Cliff Park Trail, a relatively easy hike but uphill from the falls, which will take you up to the edge of the cliff overlooking the Delaware River and the forested countryside of New Jersey. In Milford, Grey Towers, the former home of Governor Gifford Pinchot, the first head of the US forest service, is run by the National Park Service with the outside grounds open to the public. Entrance to Mansion requires a fee. Many beautiful old homes in Milford with a historic district. Nearby Stokes State Park in New Jersey has a high point known as Sunrise Mountain, a great hawk watch point, which can be driven to the top. Rt. 209 on the PA side of the Delaware is scenic with the McDade Trail Paralelling the river. On the NJ side the Delaware, Old Mine Road is much less developed with a lower speed limit and lots of wildlife and will take you all the way down to the Delaware Water Gap. If you're early in September you may catch the Sussex County Sunflower Maze in Sandyston, NJ also just a short drive from Milford, PA
