ON1 Photo Raw problems

First, I’d like to thank all the folks who responded to my post a few months back about purchasing a factory refurbished lens. You were very helpful and I did purchase a factory refurbished Tokina lens which I love. So, thanks to all. My issue now is with ON1 Photo Raw 2021. I used the 2020 version for a year and outside of how slow it was it worked OK. The 2021 version has given me a number of problems. It is even slower for starters but the real issues are that the zoom, crop and advanced (the little blue slider) don’t work. More specifically, at times the zoom tool doesn’t work, so that when I zoom in on a photo everything is blurry. At times the photos are blurry even without using the zoom tool. At other times when I try to crop a photo the photo has already been cropped (pretty weird, I know). Other times when I crop a photo and press “apply” the crop doesn’t hold and the photo reverts back to the original. I also can’t advance the photos by sliding the blue small rectangle at the bottom of the screen. There may be other issues/problems that I haven’t discovered yet. I have contacted ON1 tech support and that was not very helpful. One of the things I did was bring in my laptop for an upgrade thinking this would solve the problem. The tech installed a 2 GB SSD, 16 RAM, cleaned everything out, backed up all my files and the problem remains. I’m open to thoughts, ideas, and suggestions. I switched to ON1 because I didn’t want to pay the Lightroom monthly fee for RAW photo editing capability, but now I’m wondering if I should, and if I could access the currently installed ON1 photos through Lightroom. Thank you in advance for your input. Much appreciated.

I've been using ON1 for several years (currently on the very latest version), and have seen none of the problems or characteristics you mention. Everything works, and it's fast! The only thing I can think of is the possibility that your computer does not meet the requirements for processor, GPU and/or Open GL.

I've experienced the same problems with my 2020 version of On1 PR. I use the 2018 version when doing any masking operations and 2020 for pure & simple photo editing. I'm on my third PC computer since starting with ON1 with the 2017 version. The link below is to the Facebook On1 Users Group, you might let them know of your concerns.

Let me start out saying I love ON1 Photo RAW 2021.5. I had an issue the other day and posted in the Windows Discussion Group on the ON1 webpage. Technical support got right back to me with this answer which solved the problem.

Do you have the Fast Panning option turned on? It's in Preferences > System. It will do less rendering of the image as you are scrolling through the image view leaving it blurry looking while you are panning.

Have you added an SSD for the program's Scratch Space? That will get you one of the biggest improvements in performance.

The OpenGL version that I had in my computer wasn't recent enough when I wanted to install On1 and I had to buy a graphics card to run the OpenGL version that was needed. Apart from that, if your PC isn't up to the job it'll run VERY slowly sometimes and if you don't give it enough time to finish things it'll become very clunky.

Thank you Loren. Certainly worth looking into. BTW, I made an error in my initial description of my computer upgrade. The SSD is 2 TB (not GB). I mixed up my bytes.

Assuming your computer is robust enough for ON1 PR, try this. Do a fresh download of ON1’s installation program. Save all your presets, LUTs, etc. Then uninstall ON1. Run a cleaner to make sure you’ve gotten everything. Stop everything you have open. Temporarily, suspend or stop any anti-virus or similar programs. Then, run the installer as administrator. Turn the anti-virus and firewalls back on. Reinstall all those presets, etc. Hopefully, this will do the trick.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Much to try. It’s raining here in Southern Maine so no excuse to try out these suggestions. Many thanks.

It always helps if you tell us what os, computer version, cpu, gpu, ram and storage. That said I agree with the poster about doing a clean reinstall. That said do you have odd performance on other apps? As to your Lightroom question. Yes you can copy (that way you aren’t losing the ability to go back to On1 if you wish) your images into Lightroom. However, any processing you’ve done in On1 will not come over as Lightroom can’t read .On1 metadata files. You could export your images from On1 to get processed images but then the changes are locked.

Monthly subscription = annual version upgrade costs, give or take. Hard to compare because On1 is about 65% (arbitrary number but it feels right), of what you get with Lightroom and Photoshop. But this does not answer your question.

I just tried 2021 on an older computer running Win7 - with an i7 2600K CPU overclocked to 5 gHz, 32 gb ram, 1 gb video ram, 1 gb SATA SSD for boot drive, and an internal 4 TB RAID 1+0 for data drive. I am not seeing any of the issues you are, other than speed. There is a little lag time while waiting for On1 to build previews on the fly, but on the whole, the performance is pretty snappy compared to LR on the same machine. While using the crop tool it momentarily becomes blurry until you finish the crop then it goes to a sharper looking image. Pressing the enter key or pressing the "Apply" button in On1 achieves the same thing - the crop info is stored, but not committed to until you export the image to a raster file - which is pretty much how every raw converter I've ever used works.

Just for kicks and grins I ran it on my Intel 10th Gen 8 core laptop, with 32 gb ram, 8 gb vram, 2 gb m.2 NVMe PCIe SSD, running Win10 and it is understandably and considerably faster, though the Win7 desktop is perfectly serviceable.

I use LR because of the catalog and interoperability with some plugins that I really like, and it has Photoshop which in my opinion is the best editing application out there. I also use DXO Photolab and Nik, as well as Capture One (for my Sony camera). These are all top shelf applications, but each is different enough that it makes sense for me to keep them all current. But make no mistake - LR + PS is the only "complete" solution, providing the tools to do anything I need to an image - which is something none of the other applications can do. On1 and DXO+NIK each come close, however.

On1 has always been somewhat buggy with new releases, but these issues get reported and updates are released to correct the problems and things are generally worked out in due time.

Hi Doug,
Sounds like your graphics card isn’t adequate. I had to replace mine about two years ago. My ON1 RAw 2021 works fine and is adequately quick.

Had to do the same when ON1 released 2018.5

Once again, thank you all for your responses. I very much appreciate your time an expertise. I am not tech savvy at all but I have printed out your suggestions and will get the information you said that I need. I wondered whether or not the traffics cars was the problem but the computer tech that did the upgrade to the laptop told me it was only working to 10% capacity and should be fine. More work to do I guess. Thanks again to all.

Hi Doug,
I’m not sure if the tech meant your computer is working at 10% of its processing capability or memory or what. If the former, you may well have other issues not allowing you to utilize the other 90% of the processing power. Also be sure your GPU is being used, and is adequate for the job. As these programs “improve “ they frequently seem to need more capable hardware. Good luck!

Sorry, I should have been clearer. Again please understand I know very little about computers. What he said was that the hard drive was being used at 100% and that (according to him) was not good as there was no power to spare. Conversely, the computer graphics card was only being taxed at 10% a which he said was good. He installed a new SSD 2TB hard drive and added more memory (16 ram). Hope this answers your concerns. Thanks. Doug
