My 200-500 copy was sharp through the range

I use my 200-500 5.6 vr for all kinds of sports. At 500mm it may be a bit soft at times but at other times sharp as a tack. This is operator error on focusing. When you nail the focus your just fine.
Many hogs have seen my work and what the lens will do. For the money I can't complain at all.
For soccer, football (daytime only) baseball not softball to long, it's a very good lens.

Amazing... four pages of discussion and yet no one has deviated from either lens' acuity as the only metric of merit. Folks there is more to an optic than how well it can render fine detail of a static subject.

I have and shoot the AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR and yes my copy works well on static subjects (best at 200mm to 400mm. That said I'm a sports (soccer) shooter and the money shot is always a Striker or Winger attacking the Keeper... Capturing a Striker running at top speed and closing fast the 200-500mm f/5.6 is lame... It's weak AF can't spin those massive glass elements fast enough on this lens' helicoils. A serious design flaw in my humble estimation.

So frustrating... the camera will lock on the player (the bright red AF point clearly centered on a Striker's chest) yet the focus was lagging behind... only by inches but it is enough to ruin the image. I switched back to my AF-S 200-400mm f/4 IF ED VR and this issue vanished... Also my AF 300mm f/2.8 focuses instantly (amazing what two stops of "extra" light can do). Again no problem with the AF 300 f/2.8 prime.

Bottom Line? I've retired the 200-500mm f/5.6 to the studio where is truly shines like a diamond... those epic Fashion and Beauty Models don't run around much on set... lol

Also why doesn't anyone use either of these lenses for commercial work?
Virtually all examples posted in this Thread are of birds... There is no revenue potential in shooting birds folks...

The money is in Sports, Events, Fashion and Portraiture (at least in my market).
Below are what the delightful AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR can achieve provided movement is parallel to the sensor (and not normal to it).

Please someone post images of people taken with either lens...
I would deeply appreciate seeing some commercial genre in this Thread!
Many Thanks!

Amazing... four pages of discussion and yet no one... (show quote)

Thomas as you know I own and shoot a lot with my 200-500 5.6 vr lens. A bit soft at 500mm but that may have been because using to slow of a shutter speed. Always use my monopod as the lens is a beast and for this old guy hand holding is not an option for more than 10 minutes.

I can only speak to the 200-500 f/5.6, but it's among my favorite lenses. It is heavy, but with the VR, I've handheld it and gotten some great photos. At the 500mm setting, I've gotten some fine shots of lighthouses when they were .25 miles, using it on a tripod.

The following was shot using VR, handheld, ISO 400, 1/640, f/11, @500mm setting

Nice photo.

With the kids playing the 200-500 sounds like a better option. The 500 pf would be my choice if I didn't need the zoom to back off for taking photos tof he kids playing.
