M16 (Messier object 16 also know as the Eagle Nebula) is an open star cluster surrounded by Nebula in the constellation Serpens Cauda (The snakes tail). The cluster is ~5700 light years away and was given fame from the Hubble image know as the Pillars of Creation.
Below are some images of the Cluster and Nebula I took last week. The first was made from separate Luminance, Red, Green, Blue and Ha Filters (The Ha is a narrow band filter Hydrogen Alpha filter at ~656 nanometers). The Ha data was added to the red data since this is very red. The first image is ~ what the nebula would look like to our eyes if they where sensitive enough to see the image in color. The second image was made with separate narrow band filters, OIII (501 Nanometer) used to show ionized oxygen emmission lines , Ha is used to show the Hydrogen Alpha emmission lines and SII (672 Nanometer) is used to show ionized sulfur emission lines, ) and where combined in what is called the Hubble Palette. If you download the images you can easily make out the "Pillars of Creation" in both views).

For the Hubble Palette the OIII data is used for the blue channel, the Ha is used for the green channel and the SII is used for the red channel. This products a false color image but makes it easier to see the composition of a nebula. Note: The Ha (green channel) is there throughout the nebula and when combined with the SII (red channel) produces the golden color and the OIII combined with the Ha produces the light blue aqua color. Note: Note the green channel is the strongest and had to be reduced to allow the other colors to show though. All question comments and suggestions are welcome.

Hi topcat
Thanks for checking out the eagle nebula shots. The second image was the first time I tried combining 3 narrow band shots to create an image using the "Hubble Palette". I expect I'll try this again on another nebula.

That's awesome imaging and processing Ballard , My downfall is the nights are never the same making it difficult to gather the narrowband data. there's still lots of detail for me to capture next year if I jump off collecting on the Andromeda galaxy with its Trillion stars , I'll have at the least 2 hrs. imaging time. I hope to get my processing in check and start to calibrate my darn raw data for better results . I take it one thing at a time and learn it. It's not easy getting everything in sync night after night.

Getting these shots does take time. I just figured out that I had a light leak when I took some of my dark frames during the day time so I just retook the darks last night after trying to process some images of M33 (all the dim areas where filtered out). This probably effected my M31 images I posted a couple of weeks ago with the new camera, but it was bright enough that I hadn't noticed at the time. I will probably repost after reprocessing with the corrected dark frames. I have found that using plate solving with Sequence Generator Pro really works well to get the images lined up for multi-night shots.

I've been using SGP for the past 4-5 years and Plate solving is real nice to have and SGP is awesome handling all my equipment but, I think there's a bug in the meridian flip routine or it could be an update for phd2 and it has a new meridian flip routine that I came across while troubleshooting why my screen in the house was black after the flip have to go through before I start imaging again . The last night out imaging , I waited for the flipside of the meridian and a "What is going on" moment. I just scratched my head .

I haven't had any issue with the Meridian flip, although last night I lost the tracking star, but that was due to clouds coming in. I got a few luminance and red images of Caldwell C30 but the green and blue where lost due to the clouds. The air was pretty turbulent so the images where not as sharp as they should be.
