I had a photo shoot last evening my D810 suddenly began to change my settings after every shot...

Set the camera for 60 at F3.5 and after the shot would be anywhere from 10 to 1600.

Wondering if any of you have had this type of experience... Need the camera for a shoot next week so ordered a used body from B&H with 1 day shipping...

I'm not familiar with this problem; but when I had an issue with my D810, I did a complete camera reset and cleaned the battery compartment and changed the battery. Everything worked fine after that. I did not save and reinstall my saved settings since there could have been a glitch there. Sort of like with computers. When you have a problem, first try 'rebooting'.
Good luck.

Thank you I will look at the firmware version as well...

Is it possible you have exposure bracketing turned on? I have left that on by mistake sometimes after bracketing for HDR shots that I merge in Photomatix. I would wonder why my exposures varied so much.

Bob after you configure your new "previously owned" from B&H.
Do a Factory reset on the one with this issue... i.e. three button reset...

Make certain you have a fully charged battery...
As for setting bracketing? Been there, done that also...
With the BK button so close to the popup flash button it's easy to screw this up.
So if you're using the popup flash this could be a problem... If not, seriously doubt if this is the issue.

But check it... bring up the info screen; press BK and it should be 0F on the left... if not correct it...

Enjoy, it's a awesome tool!

When troubleshooting, Rule #1 is to focus on where the problem is, at least initially. You need to know the cause first, then you can worry about fixing it. So no factory reset, no contact cleaning, nothing that has nothing to do with setting the shutter speed. Start with the easiest, most directly connected functions that have an effect on shutter speed. The shutter speed is controlled by either the command dial or the sub-command dial, depending on how your camera is set up. So start there. Sit down with your camera and turn the appropriate dial, watching the results in the viewfinder or on the top display. Turn it slowly. See if you get any spurious shutter speed changes. Wiggle it, See if anything changes. (I'm suspecting a possible problem with the command dial indexer.) Hold the camera quietly. See if anything changes. You don't tell us what exposure mode you are using, but I'm guessing most likely Manual, maybe Shutter priority See if you inadvertently changed anything. The next thing I would check, if this happens again, is to try to determine whether the shutter speed actually changes, or does just the displayed value change.

These are incredibly complex cameras, ad it's not beyond reason that they can develop problems like this from a failed component, board, or interconnect cable. User error is the easiest thing to identify and correct. Intermittent problems can be the most difficult and expensive to fix, especially if they can't be made to happen on the workbench.

Good luck as you work through to identify and correct the problem.

Bob an emergency fix to override Shutter Speed and Aperture on the D810 is to "Lock" either the Shutter and/or Aperture (in Manual Mode) by Setting Menu; CUSTOM SETTINGS; Controls; f7 Shutter Spd & aperture lock.

I primarily shoot in a studio scenario with a full team... We are talking total chaos... So I never take chances here...
I always lock Shutter Speed to match the Studio Strobes...

Again you have to be in Manual Mode to Override Shutter and Aperture control with the f7 Kludge fix
You will see an (*) next to the SS on the Top Screen and a (L) next to SS in the info screen when you've invoked the f7 "Lock"

Do you have a grip attached? Had a problem where the grip wasn't seated fully/correctly and the voltage (I suspect) was varying enough to send a spike and changing settings. I was getting all kinds of miss-fires and bad images. I re-seated the grip (made sure all batteries were recharged) and the problem immediately gone. Good luck.Jim

Maybe this is a stupid question but sometimes simple stuff happens. Is your camera set to AV program?
I had to reset my 810 before because I couldn’t remember what did I changed on settings

Are you sure you didn't accidentally set to auto ISO?

You said you set the camera for 1/60 at f/3.5 you meant the camera is on manual mode?
Please confirm this if you still have problem otherwise I think you figure it out but didn't want to tell us.

Thank you one and all for your excellent advice. I had so much going on here with events that I just put the camera aside and used my Sony RX100 III. Good in a pinch for the events I was going to. But not for a VIP shoot which I have on Friday this week so that is the reason for the B&H purchase. Most likely I need to have a BACK UP! I have never had any problems with the 810 up to now and have been using one for over 4 years. I am shooting in manual for those who asked. Probably need to consider using shutter priority when doing these events... Please know I will explore al the suggestions presented to me and will hold back on the reset until I can determine the problem....
