We have quite a few Montanans on the Hog, and I'm sure they are proud of The Match 4 which is on TNT as I type.

This is a golf match featuring Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady against Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers. The match is being played at the drop dead gorgeous golf course at the Reserve at Moonlight Basin resort in Big Sky, Montana.

A few minutes ago they mentioned that when you play the course one of the items included in the golf cart kit is bear spray.

A few minutes after mentioning this they showed a rather large brown bear grazing grass in the rough. They also mentioned seeing foxes and cougars on the course.

Now I love to play golf, but if I got in the cart and saw bear spray I would head directly for the 19th hole. I'm not a gun person, but I think a 50 caliber Desert Eagle would be a bit more effective.

I think you may be under gunned with a 45 Desert Eagle. Even with a 500 S&W it would be a near thing. I'll take a .45-70 guide gun in my golf bag.

I have a Sig 9mm Optec that came with 4 forty round clips. If I can't get it with all that; then head for the hills!

That depends on what "effect" you want to achieve.

The Desert Eagle is a "for show gun" and not practical nor reliable. When one's life depends on getting a round down range a revolver is the best choice albeit they hold less rounds. Anyone who has ever plinked with a semi-automatic pistol and had a misfeed or a 'stovepipe jam' can relate. PLUS...it can be fired from inside the pocket (however don't do it from your pants pocket for you will be looking for a new 'pocket rocket'.

Forget a handgun. 30-06 rifle will do just fine.

Ballistics of a 44 mag are about the same as a 30-30 and I would not use that on any bear. 30-06 is good for anything in North America. You are right on. I would also consider a 308 or larger.

Bear spray is probably more effective than most pistol rounds and it doesn’t result in permanent harm to the animal. The ultimate ‘spray and pray’.

A .30-06 loaded with a 220 grain Nosler Partition bullet may be adequate for a 150 yard carefully placed shot on Mr. Griz but lacks the instant stopping power of a larger caliber round in a confrontational situation. A 405 grain .45-70 is the minimum I would accept in a short barrel guide gun and I would happily go up from there.

Bear spray has been found to be more effective than a gun in scaring off a bear...bwa

I can't understand why anyone would want to kill a bear minding his//her own business. Leave them alone and they will leave you alone. Just don't get in between a mother bear and her cubs though. The other day I saw a Yorky chase a bear up a tree.

I had almost forgot how many gun nuts this photography sight has. There must be a sight where they can discuss how big their guns are?
