I love ultra wide lenses and the dramatic prospective they provide. I also love the incredible depth of field they provide, allowing you to keep foreground and distant objects in focus together.

I used to have a Sigma 15-30mm EX DG zoom, that I shot pretty much exclusively at the 15mm end. I sold that a few years ago to another Hogger, but always planned on getting another.

After a lot of research I decided to go for a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 prime. I could have purchased one new from a number of sources for $349, or in excellent condition from MPB for $259 which is what I planned to do.

However, before pulling the trigger I checked eBay where I've had a lot of luck obtaining some fine glass for good prices. There I found one advertised as "new, open box" for $210 with free shipping so I bought that.

It arrived about an hour ago and looked perfect, with one exception. After mounting it on my D610 for a couple of test shots I discovered the focus ring did not work. Of course this is a manual focus lens, so a working focus mechanism is essential.

I dashed off a message to the seller who listed it as "no returns accepted". It is my opinion that should not apply to an item that arrives DOA...we'll see what he says. Luckily, the lens is covered by eBay's money back guarantee, but if he refuses to take it back I might have to issue a negative feedback.

Am I right?

This transaction may fall into the 'Too good to be true' category. I hope the seller is responsive, but the seller obviously knew the lens was defective when they posted "no returns accepted."

If seller described the lens as new open box, Ebay will make him give you a refund even if he said no returns accepted. If the seller gives you a hard time open a case on Ebay.

As you are looking for a new lens consider the (Sigma? - Tamron?) 8-16 - I use mine a lot, and it makes 20-30's with no problem

First, start the refund and return process directly with ebay. When the money is refunded to you, then worry about negative feedback on the seller.

I am always extra cautious when I see “no returns accepted”. Often a red flag for me.

I stay away from eBay now. Some people will try to unload garbage and describe it as being in excellent condition. I've been very disappointed both times I've purchased there. Start the money back guarantee with eBay.

I'm not so sure he knew. He claimed someone gave it to him as a gift but he had already purchased a Nikon 14mm so he decided to sell the Rokinon. However, you'd have to think he would have at least tried it. If he had he would have discovered that no matter how much you turn the focus ring, the focus never changes...and never achieves focus.

His initial response was to question my experience (50 years) so he sent me a YouTube link on the use of the lens, which was a waste of time as the guy who made the video was just showcasing pics he took with the lens...nothing on operation.

I'm going to check it out again and then write back that the lens will be returned.

Sorry, that's a cropped sensor (DX) lens. I have a D610 (FX).

You'd be surprised by the number of sellers who choose that stipulation. In any event it is covered by eBay's money back guarantee.

It's just going to be a bit of a pain to have to send it back and I'll probably have to eat the return shipping charge.

Tell seller to send a prepaid shipping label if they want it back.

Of course you can return it if it is DOA. I always sell items as “no returns” to discourage frivolous purchases, but it is meaningless if the product is not as advertised or defective. Ebay will back you up 100%, and makes it easy.

Ebay will protect you, make sure when you file for a return that you state, "condition not as advertised". The seller has to take it back if the condition of the item was not correct. And Ebay will stand by you even though the person listed it as "ne returns accepted". PERIOD. Don't worry about it, file the claim today.

Yes, you are right. If an item is not as advertised, you are entitled to a refund. Saying "no returns accepted" falls under the category of free speech, but it is not legally binding on eBay. Usually, those "no return" notices add that they will accept the return if it is defective or not as advertised. Be sure to do all corresponding through eBay. Good luck.

Have you checked the lens thouroughly for some type of locking mechanism that needs to be changed to unlock the focus ring? That was my initial thought when reading your post. Hopefully that’s all it is.
