It can be risky. Your equipment could be attacked. You could get hurt. But if you thrive on shots of people, it’s addicting.

I’ll say it again. Don’t look like a pro, especially a photojournalist (includes equipment); look like a goofy tourist.

I think I’ll go out this weekend; I’m getting energized with this discussion. Much more fun than “problems with Lightroom...”

I use a 35mm f1.4 on a FF typically, although it is a real 'in your face' lens (which is my style preference).

If I want to lug around a second camera body, then the 70-200mm would be the preference for that.

35 mm f/1.4 is my most used general lens. It is fast, lite, and easy to focus.

Back in the early - mid '70s I was shooting mostly with a Pentax 50mm F/1.4.

I just scanned these old prints on an Epson V600.

I have boxes of prints ... somewhere.

I noticed that too and agree wholeheartedly.

I use all the focal lengths I have from 20mm to 300mm on a FF camera. If I were to be limited to 1 focal length I think a 35mm f/2 is fine although I actually don't have a prime of this focal length.

How many lenses do you use for street photography?

Not many. I have the 20mm f/2.8 but I rarely use it although I do carry it with me. I use the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 a lot. I do use the 70-300mm f/4-5.6.
I have the 28, 50, 85, 135 prime but I rarely bring it out for street.

A very famous street photographer named Jay Maisel used to go out on the streets of NYC with a Nikkor 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 ED VR mounted to his full frame camera. Great results from a relatively inexpensive lens, and I'm not even a Nikon owner, but this lens gave him the range to capture most anything he saw on the streets. Emulating Maisel, I have gone out with a Canon 6D and a Tamron 28-300mm and found that, while the lens isn't the sharpest lens I own, it may be the most versatile and allowed me to get shots I wouldn't have gotten with other lenses. Plus, it was all I had to carry, with an extra battery, memory card and lens cloth in my pocket. Traveling light was a pleasure.

Scott Kelby did a video with Jay Maisel. Maisel is a delightful character and his shots take your breath away. His every other word was obscene it seemed. But he pointed out how to get good shots. And the thing that I can point to was he said, "It's not trial and error; it's trial and success." I have discs full of near successes and relish the successful photos that bring joy to people and sell products. 😊😊😊

Your welcome! A number of street shots I made I only saw the interesting subjects after I got home and review the pictures. I actually didn't pay attention to the interesting elements in the images when I took them.

I too think a 35 is great. I use a 35mm 1.4L.

IMHO that is an excellent choice tracy... I have FF Canon also and if I were to splurge on a Prime, that lens would be on top the list.

OK, Imagemine, you asked a question now is the time to consolidate the opinions and examples and give a summary definition for street photography. Make your mark on photography with the info you have gathered.
