Airshow - 1973 @ RAF Lakenheath

RAF Lakenheath is in Suffolk, SE England, and has been used by the USAF since the 1950s. I was stationed there flying F-4 Phantoms (backseat) at the time. These are recent scans of prints I made at the base photo lab, shot on Tri X (ASA 400) with my Nikon FTn and Vivitar 300 MM tele.

Always liked the F4. We had them at Korat RTAFB in Thailand in '69. Awesome flying machine.

Awesome fighting machine, too. I was at Ubon RTAFB, a bit east of Korat. Our Phantoms had lots of "toys" for the guy in back (aka GIB)) to play with. Laser and "electro-optically" (TV) guided bombs, advanced bombing computers and state-of-the-art radar warning systems. (We also had full flight controls in the back, unlike Navy Phantoms.) I never got to shoot at a MiG (that was Udorn's job) but we always carried Sparrow and Sidewinder missiles just in case.

Thanks, Paul. I actually like the grainy, B&W look for these old birds. (The scans could use a lot more cleaning up, though.)

Thanks, Joe. I fell in love with airplanes as a kid. The '50s and '60s were exciting times; always something new (and faster) coming along.
