Well there are actually. Unlikely to affect your problem but it is possible to clean the lens that the laser shines through. Sometimes this can collect a film which picks up fine dust and eventually blocks the light shining through. I think that you may have a faulty switch on the left hand mouse button. The very small clicky switches can be replaced if you can find a source of them. They are used in all sorts of places so you should be able to find one somewhere. Now here's a thought - somewhere in the software it is possible to reverse the left and right buttons (presumably for a left handed person ?). If you can find this, reverse the usage, and see if the problem goes away. That will most definitely tell you if it is the switch button. It will feel most peculiar swapping sides but at least tell you something.

Interesting.....but at this point, buying a new mouse might be the best approach for me.

Drag and drop as stated above. Cut copy and paste be very careful because if you cut and something goes wrong you can lose it. After losing a few things after cutting them but during paste I now only copy first, paste then go back and delete the copied file. Nothing worse than downloading a large file then losing it and having to start over. Better to paste, then verify the file is in the right place and works then delete the original (remembering to clear the recycle box).

Seems like good advice!

You could try going in to Mouse Settings and check the box for "Turn on ClickLock". That will enable you to drag without having to hold down the mouse button.

Interesting....

Probably what I would do unless it was a Logitech mouse because they are usually quite a bit more expensive than the usual mice. I also clean out my keyboards (also Logitech) because I have spilt drinks over mine twice (once a very sticky rum and coke) and my wife has done the same to hers once (I told her off of course). Only takes a few minutes to get the small screws out and dismantle the keyboard 'leaves'. A good wash in water and then let it dry after mopping off the excess. So far still going great. I have had some experience with small repairs like this but I guess it isn't everyones cup of tea.
You can have a bad Logitech device but my track record with them means I only ever sell Logitech regardless of possible other preferences. Can't vouch for their trackballs but if built to the same quality they should be okay.

I appreciate all the suggestions and chat -thanks! I think I'll get a new mouse and start moving my files around with "copy & paste" instead of "drag & drop"!

Go to control panel, devices and printers, mouse, mouse properties. Do the switch.

Tell that to my cat. She drags and drops mice into the house all the time.

My dachshund, too.
