OLDER THAN DIRT

I fall into the older than dirt category, and am happy to be there!

'Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?'
'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him.
'All the food was slow.'
'C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?'

'It was a place called 'at home,'' I explained!
'Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it :

Some parents NEVER owned their own house, never wore Levis , never set foot on a golf course, never traveled out of the country or had a credit card. In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears & Robuck. Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.

My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow) .
We didn't have a television in our house until I was 10. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a.m. And there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people.

I was 15 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called 'pizza pie.' When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had..

I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers -- my brother delivered a newspaper, 7 days a week. It cost 5 cents a paper, of which he got to keep 2 cents. He had to get up at 6AM every morning. On Saturday, he had to collect from his customers. His favorite customers were the ones who gave him 50 cents and told him to keep the change. His least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.

Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or most anything offensive.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren . Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?
MEMORIES from a friend :
My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it.. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea.. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something, I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old.

How many do you remember?
Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.
Real ice boxes.
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Soldering (hair curling rods too) irons you heat on a gas burner.
Using hand signals for cars without turn signals..

Count all the ones that you remember not the ones you were told about.

Cost five cents and a big bag of candy five cents. And you had to walk all of the way.

Saturday night serials at the movies

Little paper cards that you put on your bike, so it would sound like a Tommy Gun.

Ya, I'm older than dirt.

Remember the local theater was 10 cents and Mom or Dad would give us a quarter so we could get candy and sodas.

The movie also gave away a piece of dinnerware each Saturday. I got my mom an 8 piece set of dishes in about a year. Guess what ? I still have most of the set. (60 years ?)

Me and dad went to the movie to see 'Over the Rainbow' in November one year. I won a turkey with my ticket and my Dad proudly helped me carry it home to my Mom who thought it was a joke.

Saturday shows had talent shows on the stage first. Like a yo-yo competition or roller skate dancing. All before the News Reel film 'War In Korea' and the cartoons.

Our theater still had the piano up front but only used with talent show time.

I recall the Mighty Wurlitzer which used to rise from the bowels of the earth in between films, bathed in many coloured lights which dimmed as the next film was about to start, and descended back to whence it came.

Took a friend (I a girl,ot a girl friend) to the movies, Fifth grade. I took a dollar out of my "safe" a shoe box I saved my errand money in. We had no Allowance. we got a warm home, bed, clothes and food, oh and chores.
Money was earned through raking leaves, cutting grass, washing cars, shoveling snow, cleaning out garages somes times for birthdays a dollar would come our way in a card.

My "date" and I went to see the double feature, plus carttons, got a large popcorn and shared a large soda.
anbd I brought home 25 cents.

Dinner was at 6.00 PM Sharp, hyou ate what was was on the table. Or sat there til you did.
Like most children of depression age parents food was precious, we ate leftovers when they rarely occured.

The neighorhood watch consisted of the neighbors, if someone misbehaved they were sent home with a smack in the back of the head and the phone call beat you home, to an unhappy parent, where the real punnishemnt awaited.

The iece cream truck came every summer day amd Charles Chips came once a week.
Bottles were taken back to the beverage distributer once a week, and Sunday was Piza night ( Dantes, THE BEST on LI)

Miss thnose days

Oh did anyone come up with Milk Boxes?

Pizzas? Milk cartons? They weren't even a twinkle in the eye when I was a lad. You are a mere youngster masquerading as an old codger.

I used to watch the farmer deliver the milk with his wagon and horse to the house. Put the glass containers on the door step and we'd lick the cream off the paper stopper on the top. Oh god, the germs, the bacteria, the absolute nastsies on that top. Never hurt us a bit.

I remember visiting the ice house and watching the big blocks of ice come out the refrigeration unit, playing my Dad's 78's, and to go along with those horse drawn deliveries, the leavings the horses left in the street. And playing baseball practically all day every day all summer.

Would you be so kind and enlighten me on item number 4 please? I have no memory of colouring or painting or even crayoning margerine. I recall a product called Stork which is still available over here but I have always thought of as being yellow.

I got 24 (missed Blackjack gum, we had Fleers Double Bubble). I don't ever recall margarine until maybe the 50's (Nucoa). Iceman with a leather shoulder pad and tongs. Gas 15 cents a gallon or 17 cents for Amoco White Gas. 25 cent all day Sat movie matinees - 12 to 4:30 or 5, then home to dinner. Yah I'm older than dirt, but still teach school and amaze my students with tales of what life was like pre-electronics age (ancient history - they think fiction).

and $0.25 was enough gas for a day's trip. Call the grocery store in the morning with your order and they deliverd it that afternoon. The "Coal Man!" hollared and then set a shute in the basement window to dump the coal into the coal bin in the cellar. You picked the phone up, hearing the line was clear and the operator said "Number please" - if you didn't know the number for someone in the neioghborhood you gave the name. You didn't ride the school bus if you lived within a mile of school - even first graders.
