Do You Enjoy/Remember Tenor Sax Battles?

Thelonious Monk composed the jazz classic, "Straight No Chaser", which has been recorded by many jazz musicians. Many years ago, I had the privilege of attending jazz concerts in the NYC area. Several were Norman Granz presents JATP (Jazz at the Philharmonic). One of the highlights were Tenor Sax battles.

Here's one of the more recent battles at Carnegie Hall, with Joshua Redman and James Carter on tenor saxes. The big band (I think 20 pieces) really swings.

My dad and three brothers all played tenor saxophone. My dad was at the professional level with his own band and dance/pool hall back in the 1940’s. This evoked great memories. There were many solos in our dining room.

Have you watched the Bosch series? The character is a jazz (vinyl) aficionado.

Awesome...thanks for posting

I am trying to play the sax myself (Alto) and at 63 years old and no real musical abilities I am finding if very difficult. But love the sound of the Sax and will keep trying.

Don't even try!! Back in the days of JATP the battle was between Eddie "Lockjaw" Harris and Flip Phillips. Incredible stuff!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the note.
