Hi All, Any suggestions for pulling my HEIC images off my iPhone. Photos converts to a .jpg. Coolmuster pulls the images but removes the date they were shot and all other metadata. I do really want to keep the metadata. Open to any suggestions and thanks in advance!

I get HEIC format when using AirDrop.

CORRECTION OF MY EARLIER POST: If the iPhone saved the file as a HEIC file, it transfers it the same way, "Photos" opens it as an .HEIC, and maintains the original file details.

That’s what I thought but I don’t use photos much so I was not 100% sure.

But why?

I find HEIC annoying because most of the non-Apple world and some of the Apple users, can’t read HEIC. JPEG is an unofficial standard. Everyone can read JPEG. I convert HEIC to JPEG before sharing so others can see them.

If using iPhone 12 Pro:

Settings - Photos - Transfer to Mac or PC - Choose “Keep Originals”

Good info. I just got the 12Pro, so I made this change. I rarely use my phone for photos, though. Thanks

Grandma G - the iPhone 12 Pro is the best for having something with you…the basic camera will shoot in raw format, if you like that option, and the “portrait” mode works well for all sorts of situations…that beautiful beverage you were just served, or your grandkids doing something you want to remember. I’ve also gotten some nice sunsets and landscapes with it.

All that said, I’m still taking my DSLR on vacations to get the reach I’m not getting with the phone. Check it out..or PM me if you want more info.

With the Pro Photo app, you can shoot in RAW. Problem solved.

Is that the name of it? "Pro Photo App"?

The local newspaper I often submit photos to told me that they cannot use photos in HEIC, that they must be in JPEG. Fine by me. I just don't understand why Apple has to create its own format that nobody else can use. I've been an Apple Fan Boy since 1990, but this one just boggles my mind.

I prefer the DLSR, as well, but sometimes I just don't feel like taking it out. Especially at night, I find that I get better night photos and video with the iPhone 12 Pro than with the Nikon D7200. And the file sizes aren't nearly as large.

Thanks, I upgraded from an XS for free when I switched to T-Mobile. I’ve only had the phone for 1 day and I tried out the camera already. I will fool around with it some more. I usually have my Sony RX100v3 for those unexpected opportunities but the phone may do in a pinch. It’s nice to know that I’ll always have a decent camera with me!!

Interesting. I tried night photos at Disney with my old phone and they were terrible, so I’m curious to see how this phone does. I can’t see it replacing my REAL camera.

I searched for Pro Photo in the App Store and got the ProPhoto magazine. What app are you using to shoot RAW?

Neither replaces the other. I normally prefer using the DSLR. However, I am constantly amazed at just how much improved the camera in the 12 Pro is over my previous iPhone 7. And THAT took great photos. The 12 Pro is many times better. I'm sure there is a trick for night photography with the DSLR, but I haven't figured it out, yet. Sometimes, it's just easier to use the iPhone.

Apple is a development company they often offer new hardware or software features before anyone else. However the problem with that is it takes the world some time to catch up.

HEIC is intended to be the new JPEG, it compresses about 1/3 smaller on an average, and i believe it has some features for video. However the world hasn’t jumped on board yet.

That makes sense.
