I took the ferry from Portland and it cuts off a lot of driving. Peggy's cove is worth stopping at and Halifax. On the way to Cape Breton a stop at Turo for the tidal bore is quite interesting. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to explore Cape Breton on the Cabot trail and Black Brook Cove is a neat place.

Unfortunately, you'll know your answer around July 19 to 22. Thai when the Canadian Government usually announces it closures.

Clearly you visited Peggy's Cove at the worst possible time. I was there mid to late afternoon on a gray day but there were useful sky formations. There were not more than 100 or so people around and many of them of them were at the lighthouse. I was able to capture all my images, except the lighthouse, without other tourists in the frame.
